Being a citizen scientist this month means potentially skipping a survey๐ŸŸ

Some Riverfly groups take a pause now but if you are still out sampling, watch your step. It's spawning season.

๐Ÿ“ข Spotted a Redd? Don't step in! Take a ๐Ÿ“ท & alert your coordinator immediately.

Late summer and early autumn can naturally bring lower numbers and diversity at some monitoring sites, and you may spot smaller larvae in your sampling trays - don't forget your magnifying glasses! ๐Ÿ”Ž

๐Ÿ‚ The autumn equinox is here. As the days become shorter and temperatures begin to drop, our rivers are changing too โ€“ for riverflies, this is also a time of seasonal transition.

Autumn is arriving. So do riverflies change with the seasons?Earlier in the summer, you might find some large larvae in your sample. Spring and summer peak times for many species to emerge as adults, so those larger are nearly ready to go. You might be lucky enough to spot one emerging from your sampling tray!As autumn arrives, riverfly numbers and diversity may naturally be lower at some sites. Many species have already emerged, while others are present as eggs or very small larvae. So your autumn sample may look quite different from one taken earlier in the year.Seasonal change is part of the picture when we interpret what we find in our rivers.

Spotted again by an eagle-eyed Riverfly monitor!

Riverfly surveyors: if you spot signal crayfish, killer/demon shrimp, or zebra mussels โ€” don't touch or move it. Photo it, note the spot, report via iRecord/INNS Mapper, then Check Clean Dry your kit.

#Riverflies are โ€˜canaries of the riverโ€™. Monitoring #Riverfly populations is a great way to evaluate river health. Completed my training with the Tweed Foundation. My journey began when listening to Robert Macfarlane talk about his book, โ€˜Is A River Aliveโ€™, last August. @riverflies.bsky.social

Welcome and congratulations on becoming a Riverfly Monitor! @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social has inspired a fair few people to seek out Riverfly training days since his tour last year โ˜บ๏ธ
