If we look at a few decades of web performance, what technologies and techniques worked, what didn’t, what made the most difference, what has stood the test of time? Making a fast website is challenging enough; keeping a website fast is harder!

Decline and Fall of the Roman Bagel. 5 out of 5 stars. No questions. Perfection achieved.

Here, a demo that compares the 4 values: codepen.io/editor/bramu...

What was the thingy again that prevents your scroll actions from leaking out of a container? I even forget if it was CSS or JavaScript.

x.querySelector chooses elements inside of specifically x. If you want to select a dialog containing x (dialog:has(&)), `x.closest("dialog")` is the way to look up the dom tree from x

@quirksmode.orgOct 7, 2026, 5:16 PM

closest(). Interesting. I had no idea it existed. But then, I don't do a lot of JavaScript these days. Thanks.

@quirksmode.orgOct 7, 2026, 4:05 PM

What might be useful is x.querySelectorAll('dialog:has(&)') where & refers back to element x.

The cost of AI

The tech giants are creating a system with the appeal of a 19th-century factory without delivering the sole benefit: cheaper stuff. Ask what the true cost of the tokens would be. Nobody knows, but raising awareness is a good idea.

And I went shopping between the blogging about AI and the fixing of image galleries on conference sites ... and forgot the most important thing: a new Android. Ah well. If it works in Chrome/Mac and Safari/iOS I think it'll work on Chrome/Android and Samsung/Android.

And what will the true, unsubsidised price of those 50 billion tokens be? More or less than hiring two or three web developers?

I am simultaneously discussing the current state of the @perfnow.nl venue, explaining the boys about the coronations of Charlemagne and Napoleon, and solving a Safari/iOS bug.

I'm not sure when any of it will be done.

And I almost forgot to publish the short blog entry I wrote yesterday.

I asked because of the stories of sites that were overwhelmed by AI requests, and I thought: 'Don't they behave like spiders?' Meanwhile it appears that that some AIs have pretty badly-written proxy services and need to re-parse your pages time and again.

I admit I was importing JavaScript ideas about scope. It helps me understand. 'Scoped to' to mean 'computed' or something. I do not fully understand the actual, computed, and so on stages of CSS properties, I'll readily admit. But I learned something today.
