🌍 Air pollution is a modifiable risk factor for dementia. Reducing exposure to polluted air could help protect brain health and support dementia prevention.

The study adds to growing evidence of the potential impact of air quality on the brain.

🧪 Researchers also found sex-related differences in IL-6, a marker involved in inflammatory processes. In women, increased GFAP levels partially explained the association between air pollution exposure and declines in attention and executive function.

🔬 The study followed 226 cognitively unimpaired participants from the ALFA+ cohort over three years. Greater exposure to traffic-related air pollution was associated with increases in GFAP, a biomarker of astrocyte reactivity in the brain.

🧠 A study led by Dr. @natvilortejedor.bsky.social, from BBRC, links air pollution to early signs of neuroinflammation in people at risk of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly in women. The findings highlight the importance of understanding how environmental factors may affect brain health.

Two missions to discover what happens in the brain as the disease develops and to understand why Alzheimer’s is a multifactorial disease.

An experience to discover the challenges that research still faces.

🧠 On 3 October, we joined #OpenPRBB for the third consecutive year, an initiative by @prbb.org.

With "Journey to the Brain: Explore a New Dimension of Alzheimer’s," we proposed a scientific expedition to explore the brain and the multifactorial nature of Alzheimer’s. 🔬

The study is the result of an international collaboration with Altoida, Sant Pau Memory, Hospital Clínic, BBRC & other partners.

Research continues to further investigate how cognitive and biological markers can be combined in AD.

@barcelonabeta.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 9:20 AM

The researchers also modeled a two-step approach combining digital cognitive screening with plasma p-tau217. In this model, pre-screening increased the positive predictive value of p-tau217 from 81.7% to 95.3%, while reducing the number requiring blood testing.

@barcelonabeta.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 9:20 AM

Participants from BBRC’s β-AARC research cohort contributed to this international study, alongside cohorts and clinical sites from Australia, Barcelona and the US. The work brings together expertise in digital cognition, clinical assessment and blood-based biomarkers.

@barcelonabeta.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 9:20 AM

In 688 participants across Australia, Spain and the US, the Altoida NeuroMarker identified mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with a ROC-AUC of 0.89. Digitally identified cognitive impairment was also significantly associated with elevated plasma p-tau217.

@barcelonabeta.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 9:20 AM

🧠New research involving BBRC explores how digital cognitive assessment and plasma p-tau217 may provide complementary information on cognition and #Alzheimer’s disease biology.
