Prof Shane Gunster who studies oil+gas populism says the broader context is an industry trying to proactively shape public opinion for years. "Groups that are not explicitly connected to particular funders or industry itself can do things that industry itself would find challenging to do or to say."

Another doc showcases campaigns to defend natural gas in homes, attack the emissions cap, downplay the necessity of low-carbon, and suggest LNG can lead to lower emissions. Studies show pollutants seep into homes with gas heat, gas stoves linked to asthma risk, + LNG climate impact is underestimated

The materials were originally uncovered by Greenpeace Canada, and viewable online until The Narwhal began asking questions, after which they became password protected. Greenpece believes the network operates under the guise of independent entities but actually coordinates industry-linked activities.

The document relates to a presentation scheduled to be part of a session where fossil fuel advocacy groups were to discuss shaping public perceptions in favour of the industry. It referenced @writermjs.bsky.social and his excellent work reporting on a pipeline: thenarwhal.ca/csis-resourc...

A document meant for a behind-closed-doors group of fossil fuel advocates earlier this year got right to the point: Canada’s policies to fight the climate crisis, protect nature and defend Indigenous Rights are a “problem” and environmental organizations are “opponents” thenarwhal.ca/fossil-fuel-...

Presentations and videos from a network of 30-plus pro-fossil fuel groups show a coordinated effort to influence public opinion on climate change, and challenge environmental groups, journalists and First Nations land defenders.

Residential schools were a tool Canada used to steal Indigenous land. These Narwhal stories explore that connection, and efforts to rebuild relationships between Indigenous communities and the places they come from, to strengthen their cultures and their futures. thenarwhal.ca/tag/truth-an...

A leaked document has made a big splash in Alberta, but the full details have not been made public — until now.

The document lays out plans to overhaul Alberta’s natural gas pipelines in an effort boost oil and gas and support new AI data centres, via @drewanderson.bsky.social.

This week, we published two huge investigations, both possible because people trusted us to handle sensitive information with care.

When we use confidential sources or report on leaked documents, we take the responsibility seriously. Here’s what that looks like:

SCOOP: A leaked document indicates Alberta is considering rewriting laws, creating new Crown corporations to take over the natural gas system and build new gas pipelines and taking on costly legal battles — in large part so AI data centres can have access to power, @drewanderson.bsky.social reports.

After Ontario replaced the Endangered Species Act, ministry biologists were told they couldn't review developers' plans.

We found that over 12 have since left, feeling their jobs "stopped feeling meaningful."

Oil firms say they already pay significant taxes + royalties. Alberta took $17.2b in oilsands royalties in 2024-25. But royalties only get a small % of higher oil revenues, says @jimbostanford.bsky.social Centre for Future Work. A windfall tax could make btwn $18b - $46b says @policyalternatives.ca

Canada’s large oil companies are raking in record profits during an energy crisis. We’ve been here before — but unlike last time, Ottawa isn’t prodding the industry to use more of the money to clean up its act. In some ways, it’s even volunteering to pick up the tab. thenarwhal.ca/canada-oilsa...

I wanted to show the political claims, year by year. Most of it is online on government or parliamentary websites. I also went to the national archives and found a Harper speech from soon after he became PM. “Friends, the era of empty rhetoric on the environment is over," he said. It was 2007.

I've been reporting on federal politics since 2008. My entire career I've listened to politicians talk about using carbon capture to cut industrial emissions. Carbon capture removed 68 million tonnes over a 24-year period. The oilsands added much more, 92 million tonnes, over a single year, 2024.
