It is sure satisfactory to get to this point, but damn, I have not missed this...

This was a long-coming, but incredibly fun project with the participation of several collaborators and many students. Huge thanks to all of them! Special kudos to lead author Michael Mitschke for a fantastic body of work on this paper 👏💪🎉

Mainland populations are stable probably due to the high dispersal capabilities, but isolated populations on Gotland and the Arctic mountains show lower diversity and high differentiation. This highlights the power of museomics for tracking real-time evolutionary dynamics in insects! 🐝✨

While historical records suggested declines in relative abundance for this species in Sweden 📉, populations in other countries have been reported to increase 🤔 Remarkably, we found a temporally stable population structure and an increase in genomic diversity over the past 150 years 📈❗

Genomic diversity changes in different populations and through time.

New research in @molecularecolup.bsky.social!

Museum collections help us understand the genomic consequences of the insect biodiversity crisis 🐝🧬🏛️

We analyzed specimens spanning 150 years to track genomic diversity in the common carder bee in Sweden.

🐝 More than 1 million insect species have been described. Millions more may still be out there.

Now imagine trying to sequence them. 🧬

From tiny amounts of DNA to wildly different genomes, insects present some of biodiversity genomics’ biggest challenges.

A collage of diverse insects arranged around the text, “Unlocking the Genomes of Earth’s Most Diverse Animals.” The insects include beetles, moths, butterflies, bees, ants, grasshoppers, stick insects, and other species, illustrating the extraordinary diversity of insects.World map surrounded by photographs of insects from different regions. Text reads, “More than 1 million insect species have been described. Millions more may remain undiscovered. And each represents a genome we have yet to explore.”

Our paper on archaic introgression in imputed ancient genomes is out.

Imputation performs better in archaic regions, making Neanderthal and Denisovan segments detectable in low-coverage data. Thousands of archived genomes become usable.
