‘Our study challenges the idea that smoking itself has a protective effect for Parkinson’s.’

New research from @oxpop.bsky.social suggests carbon monoxide may play a role in the lower risk of Parkinson’s seen in smokers.

More than 1/3 of adults in England have high blood pressure and 2/3 of these are unaware of their condition according to a new study of 1.4 million adults. Oxford Population Health researchers analysed clinic blood pressure measurements collected by @ourfuturehealthuk.bsky.social buff.ly/h052TSQ

Quote from Wenyu Liu, Medical Statistician at Oxford Population Health: 'While hypertension is largely a “silent killer”, the current approach to detecting and treating high blood pressure is not fit for purpose. This underscores the need for population-wide prevention strategies alongside targeted treatment for people at high cardiovascular risk.'

How do you identify the earliest signs of cancer development? 🤔 buff.ly/3A84x0S @utoronto.ca

A new study of blood samples collected up to nine years before a cancer diagnosis found changes in the DNA that captured the body’s response to early traces of cancer development.

Quote from Philip Awadalla, Professor of Molecular Genetics at Oxford Population Health and the Big Data Institute: 'Together, these studies chart a progression from detecting established tumours to identifying the earliest systemic signals of cancer development – supporting a future in which minimally invasive blood tests could complement existing screening and help identify people who would benefit most from closer surveillance.'

How can we distinguish genetic from environmental explanations for differences associated with ancestry? ❓

A new @nature.com study analysed data from more than 17,000 families in Mexico City, using genetic variation within families to address this question.

Quote from Jason Torres, Genetic Epidemiologist Lead at Oxford Population Health: Different traits can give very different answers. We hope this family-based approach provides a principled framework for researchers investigating these questions in other populations, and across other traits and diseases.

Very hot drinks could increase your risk of oesophageal cancer ☕ A new study by Oxford Population Health researchers has found that drinking very hot drinks is linked to a three-fold higher risk of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. @cancerresearchuk.org Learn more ➡️https://buff.ly/ialUARY

On the left overlaid text reads: These findings show that in a UK population where most people consume hot tea or coffee on a daily basis, how we consume them matters for our risk, and that letting drinks cool slightly before consumption could prevent a substantial number of cancers.
