“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

Halvemaansteeg, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. Today, a cycle only street crossing a tram only street.

Top, 1979, black and white: a busy road junction with a taxi in the foreground, a van and other cars queued behind it, and a cyclist among pedestrians crossing on the left. A "Politie" police station sits on the corner.

Bottom, today, in colour: the same junction, now a cycle street with no cars. A man and a young girl cycle away from the camera past bollards and traffic cones, with people walking and pulling suitcases on the paths either side.

I'm quickly become a raving roundabout proponent, because I don't think even camera enforcement is going to stop the epidemic of red-light running we have in the current era of reckless social and political narcissism. Do NOT @ me about roundabout issues for non-drivers. We have design options.

Today I delivered another 18 bags of groceries from White Center Food Bank to 9 neighbors in White Center and Seattle for @cascade.org #PedalingReliefProject – we use volunteers with bikes and trailers to bring fresh delicious food every week to folks with mobility and accessibility challenges 🚲 😍

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million/yr on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” Investing in bike infrastructure saves money.

In honor of #BannedBooksWeek, I'm happy to report that many state DOTs have refused to add my book to their own libraries (and happier to report that many of the same state DOTs have held secret book clubs with my book)

Big, burly men that drive to the gym: "You are not going to carry a ladder on a bike..." Me, a quite dainty/small male human:

If you want to live in a congested and irrelevant city 10 years from now—keep on building freeways to the suburbs. If you want to live in a prosperous and livable city 10 years from now—invest in the best transit you can today.

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

One of the key lessons from Dutch cycling history is cities didn't start with protected lanes. They began by making streets safer, calmer and more inviting; with lower speeds, parking restrictions, traffic filters and reduced through-traffic to create an environment in which cycling could flourish.🧵

NYC is running away from what is obviously needed - rethinking freight. This highway needs to be replaced with at-grade light rail, low speed car lanes, and new trucking alternatives. Water and rail should be used for the big stuff, and then move materials onto the little guys for last mile.

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail shows just how transformative public transit can be. But for too long, riders have had to put up with delayed trains, overcrowded platforms, and long-promised expansions that have yet to become reality. Our communities deserve better.

Came across this supersized partial diverter with a chicane design along one of Minneapolis’s bike boulevards. Judging by the size of the trees it has been there a long time.

The combination of "everyone has to be in a car all the time" and "everyone is now performing for a camera and creating content all the time" is a bad combination and not a sign of a healthy society.
