PhD student Soha Patil completes NIHR SPARC placement at NIHR BRC: Oxford Health
The NIHR SPARC scheme offers NIHR Academy members the opportunity to spend time in another part of the NIHR to develop new skills, establish collaborations and broaden their research experience.

Soha joined the University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry, on a project exploring radiology reports from people with psychosis.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) isn't one-size-fits-all, & neither is genetic risk.

New research suggests susceptibility may vary depending on the type of trauma experienced.

Genetic risk for PTSD may vary depending on the type of trauma experienced
Differences in people’s DNA have previously been linked to PTSD, but research on this topic has rarely considered how different types of traumatic experiences might affect these genetic links. We found that the broad effect of the genome on PTSD does indeed differ across different experiences, and that
this is also sometimes
true when we look
at the effects of
specific genes.”
