Raising awareness saves lives. Next time you or a loved one is severely ill, ask one simple question: "Could this be sepsis?" It could make all the difference.

@sepsiscanada.bsky.socialSep 4, 2026, 2:59 PM

Sepsis is more common than most realize, yet nearly 40% of Canadians have never heard of it. It's hard to diagnose because its symptoms mimic other conditions, making it a hidden emergency. But when you look at infection-related deaths, sepsis is likely the 3rd leading cause of death in Canada.

The immune system not only attacks the infection, but it also attacks your organs, leading to organ failure. This is a medical emergency, and you should seek treatment urgently!

It's your body's overreaction to an infection. In an attempt to destroy the infection, your body releases specific chemicals into your bloodstream, triggering further immune reaction (where the poisoning misnomer comes from).

Sepsis is often referred to as "blood poisoning," which is technically inaccurate. Do you know what sepsis really is? 🧵
