If you haven't read it, this is a very good commentary, gazing from outside the US, on some of the anti-ADEI backlash in social work academia, and on a particular special issue that embraced that backlash & its centrist politics: anzswjournal.nz/anzsw/articl...
Remember our history. Learn from it. Refuse to let it repeat itself. Keep fighting for a just world.
It's so disappointing, and yet not at all surprising. Particularly how the surrender & anticipatory compliance has been in part led by scholars positioning themselves as the defenders of "classical liberalism" & their visions of science, objectivity, & professional neutrality. Reactionary centrism.
Other HASTAC impact: running into a fellow former HASTAC Scholar at The University of Michigan's Digital IDEAS Summer Institute last year, & reminiscing about Digital Fridays.
Some HASTAC impact: a close reading of Kate Crawford's Atlas of AI for our @hastacscholars.bsky.social collective book review informed a lit review I co-authored on social work, AI, & the conspicuous absence of structural perspectives, published earlier this year: doi.org/10.11157/anz...
You're welcome, Cathy. Thank you for championing HASTAC all of these years! I thought a lot about HASTAC at #4S2026, especially in the making & doing sessions, & also the long arc of my search for spaces & community for my approaches to technology that don't quite fit into social work academia.
I realize you have to frame everything in terms of AI to make anyone care abt anything today, so… These free pubs are the collective effort of ~40 knowledge + creative wrkers celebrating the misfits ideas + entities and aberrant modes of exploration that defy AI’s disciplining, extractive logics :)
To me, HASTAC was a space to think through weird side projects that didn't have the same kind of weight & disciplinary heft of a dissertation. Where I could collaborate w/ PhD & Master's students from a range of disciplines & fields. Where I could learn & practice critical making & tech inquiry.
I participated in a small virtual gathering today reflecting on @hastac.bsky.social. It will be missed, & I'm grateful that @hastacscholars.bsky.social was an early & formative part of PhD my experience. Digital Fridays were fun, as was the collab book review. HASTAC 2023 was a fantastic conference.
"The overpasses are designed for larger animals, but through surveys and trail cameras, biologists have spotted even smaller ones, like bunnies and northern leopard frogs — which have seen dramatic declines in population over the last few years earning a protected status — using the crossings."
The U.S. federal government is enlisting artificial intelligence to help decide what public records you get to see, reports Nate Jones for the Washington Post. .
Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.
As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...
Back in NYC at @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social today, I feel revived & energized by the conversations at #4S2026. I feel fresh perspective on the communities I am part of here, asking critical questions & working to support & advance alternative sociotechnical practices & visions, having fun w/ it.
CUNY at 4S, presenting on @cunyailab.bsky.social & community data infrastructures: @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social @cunygcdi.bsky.social @digitalfellows.bsky.social @cunypitlab.bsky.social @gcsocialwelfare.bsky.social @humanitiescuny.bsky.social @cunygcsociology.bsky.social @cunyenglish.bsky.social
We're planning a public execution. We only admit white "refugees" from a former apartheid state. Our domestic security service uses white nationalist messaging. And the president routinely appears to encourage or endorse violence against his opponents & the media. Nothing subtle or complicated here.
"More than a year after National Guard members began patrolling the streets of the nation’s capital, a federal appeals court on Wednesday opened a hearing by asking the government if there were any limits on a president’s authority to call up the guard in D.C." #nationalguardgohome
It feels like pretty soon I'm going to need a bot to contain all of the bots sending 2026 midterm campaign fundraising texts. Really getting out of hand (and rather annoying) at this point.
Next Tuesday, 10/20/26, from 5:30-7:30pm, come check out the CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative (DHI) Fall 2026 Lightning Talks at @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social. Hosted by @cunygcdi.bsky.social & @digitalfellows.bsky.social.

Thoroughly exhausted by @4sweb.bsky.social in Toronto, in a good way. What a great conference. 2 presentations w/ 2 very different communities of inquiry, 1 live podcast interview, many friends old & new. I dreamed of presenting at an #STS conference for years; it did not disappoint. #4S2026 #SWTech
