this one is pretty illuminating though

That time of year when family and friends ask if I've heard about the research that just won the Nobel Prize.

Of course peer review is important, and it should not be abandoned. Here I’m only discussing the selection process among a pool of excellent applications and i propose some leads to make it more efficient.

thanks! But no, AI vetting sounds like a terrible idea...

Grant peer review costs a lot: ~$40k per application in reviewer time, with proposals reviewed again and again.

In @thetransmitter.bsky.social , I propose a partial lottery: reviewers decide pass/fail, chance picks among the passes, and "unmissable" ideas and ECRs get protected routes.

Glad to see this out! And congrats for all the hard work!!

Interesting piece in which @itsneuronal.bsky.social suggests dropping the common bit-per-spike metric & reporting the duration of held-out data to validate a model
Seems to be just 120ms of data for a sharply tuned, high firing rate head-direction cell, i.e. just 3-4 spikes

New paper alert! 🚨

We found that the brain's compass is remarkably stable at two scales

1️⃣ the system maintains its internal organization for weeks
2️⃣ It "remembers" its orientation for weeks, even after a single visit

This may be key to how the brain aligns its other maps.

🚨Important paper alert (a bit late, but see below)
Guo et al show that while place cells may not initially form a manifold reflecting the environment's topology, the topology is learned across days, during sleep.
