I will likely stop visiting it at all soon for my own safety. I understand that this may result in losing contact with friends I've made through streaming, but there has to be a line somewhere. And I think Discord has more than crossed it.

I know this sounds like fear mongering, but how many red flags does one event need? This entire implementation is just terrifying. I cannot in good conscience trust the platform in any shape or form right now.

And if you think this stops as nsfw art, you must not br paying attention. Remember Stripe? They've been pressuring game shops to remove LGBT products. They sure are in a good position to strongarm Discord to ban LGBT topics from their service now, huh.

I have heard a first hand account of someone in the Phillipines being locked out because of this. Not due to age gates. But because their country has blocked access. What about them? They literally can't use Discord anymore.

But Zach, I don't even go to age gated chats! It won't affect me! I garentee it will affect some of your friends. And as more and more people are prevented from using Discord's basic features because of this, do you really think they'll all stay?

This is supposedly caused by a number of reasons, but one I'm seeing is that you have to relogin or you have to turn off the 'block adult content on iOS' option. Even on Android. Why? How do you fuck up implementation that bad? It feels intentional to trick people, not accidental.

And their 90% of people not affected claim is already proving to be false. I'm in servers where nearly everyone is either being hit with the teen label or still being barred from content as if they were! Normal ass embeds and bluesky links are breaking for them!

And don't forget that Discord revealed a partnership with a gambling company at the same time as this! Noe you'll get gambling ads! I'm sure that has nothing to do with them checking ages.

Then there's the service they're verifying your info through, Stripe. Did we all forget that PayPal isn't the only payment provider shutting down artists right now? Stripe is just as bad. They also pressure companies into doing that stuff.

Before you say 'they swear they don't keep the information,' thats what literally every company doing this claims. And you hear about new leaks all the time because of it. I don't trust that at all.

Then there's the fact that Discord has been involved in two enormous data leaks already. They do NOT have the track record to be trusted right now with that level of information.

Next, they implemented it a day after their quiet announcement that it was happening. That is not an acceptable period of time for anyone to prepare for this, especially considering the past attempt and the fact that its not required everywhere.
