I can't believe that the Canadian government shut down the weather radio service. How is anyone supposed to get weather updates outside of a city now? This was an essential service and they just turned it off and told people to use an app, when there is no public telecom operator, and the vast […]

Vale Margaret Hamilton.
She was a Software Engineer.
She was the _first_ Software Engineer because she defined the term, Software Engineering:
"When I first came up with the term, no one had heard of it before, at least in our world. It was an ongoing joke for a […]

A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

Btw the timestamp is wrong because the camera I used to take the photo can't count to 2026, and I forgot to disable it xd

This is the third case I buy for my (almost) 8 years old phone. I'm surprised they still sell accessories for it.

My HTC U12+ between the old broken case and the new case. The phone has an Osage-chan image inside the glass on the back.

Last image I'll be able to receive for this event. I think I'm getting used now to tracking the ISS with the antenna, this was a <30º pass only. Next time I'll try to receive using my SDR, in order to get sharper images. But I'm afraid it will get overloaded by TV stations if I use this antenna.

"First Satellite launched to space, 04.10.1957". It contains 3 images of the Sputnik 1, one of them next to a person. The satellite looks like a metal sphere with 4 antennas.

More, slide 5/12.

A kid holding a Yagi antenna I think? Caption: Students monitor an ARISS school contact. Top of the image is noise again.

Slide 3/12. I think directivity is better, but still kinda meh. This was a 60º pass.

Some kids on a stage. Caption says "Australian school contact". The top part of the image is noisy.

@queroseno The Eiffel Tower must be a good long wave antenna now that you mention it 🤔🤔

C@cosstab.mastodon.chabal.es.ap.brid.gyOct 4, 2026, 4:44 PM

I thought the next ISS pass was at 19 but it was at 18 🙃 I made an antenna upgrade, but I won't be able to test it until tomorrow. The new antenna didn't have a reflector, so I added one made of measuring tape, tuned to 440MHz.

The new TV antenna next to the one that I was using before. This is a complete one that wasn't cut in half.

Example of yesterday's reception. I record it with my phone's microphone, and then decode it using YONIQ on PC.

C@cosstab.mastodon.chabal.es.ap.brid.gyOct 4, 2026, 11:08 AM

@queroseno I just uploaded what I could receive for now.

C@cosstab.mastodon.chabal.es.ap.brid.gyOct 4, 2026, 11:06 AM

These are images that I managed to receive yesterday in 2 passes, with the rubber ducky antenna of the walkie. The best pass was at 65º of elevation.

SSTV with same logos and callsigns as the image from before. The lower half is almost all noise.
It contains a photo of a man, seemingly in the space station, holding a radio microphone, with a laptop behind him.

A caption says "P. Dubrov conducts a radio session with the students".This is slide 8 of 12. A kid in an astronaut costume is talking to a microphone that is being hold by another person. The caption says "ARISS student asking their question".This image is pretty much all noise, only the callsigns can be clearly seen. I think it says "Slide 9/12". I think it may be the same slide as the first one in this post.
