The Social Reckoning might be the most Aaron Sorkin movie to ever Aaron Sorkin.

actually to be fair that isnt what these people are saying. i think i was projecting myself onto them there, for which i am listening and learning. no, what these people are saying is: "i find the existence of OTHER BEINGS WITH CONSCIOUSNESS to be an intolerable burden on my own." it's solipsism.

I think at this point all 4 of us understand where the others stand and are not going to persuade each other, so I'm muting this thread

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 2:14 PM

My understanding is that there's not a lot of authoritative data about who commits fare evasion, but there's plenty of data showing that *enforcement* disproportionately affects black, brown, and poor communities www.cssny.org/news/entry/m...

I mean, one of the reasons I supported Zohran for mayor last year is because I believe in his vision for free buses (though of his big three goals, I think it's the one he's least likely to accomplish)

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:47 PM

I think the "real issue" is that it's a horrible experience, and then sure, because of my political leanings my annoyance gets amplified to genuine anger

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:46 PM

I also think the comparison to drugstore lockboxes is apt bsky.app/profile/davi...

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:45 PM

I'm not a fan of turnstile hoppers and I'm not one myself, but I also don't think they're the biggest problem with the subway today, I especially don't like that the obsession with fare evasion is making the experience worse for the all of us

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:26 PM

They're also part of a whole raft of increasingly punitive features emerging from an obsession with fare evasion on the part of certain MTA execs/pundits, to the point where it seems to dominate and distort discussions of how to improve the subway

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:24 PM

Put another way: I'm not railing against these kinds of exit systems in general, I'm complaining about the ones that have been installed in NYC, which have made an already slow and crowded exit process noticeably worse

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:21 PM

Compared to my memory of London, SF, and DC gate systems, the NYC gates are bulkier, uglier, slower, jankier (though I have occasionally been exasperated by traffic jams exiting busy London tube stations).

same thing as the plastic lock boxes everything is behind in drug stores now. hugely inconvenient security theater built to manage a practically nonexistent issue for a completely disconnected executive class

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:02 PM

With these new gates, you stand there waiting for the sensor to detect you, which can take a few seconds or more, and then they slide shut behind to force you to exit 1 by 1. It's super awkward and noticeably time consuming, especially when you have a lot of people exiting a busy station

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:01 PM

In a normal subway station, you just walk out, the turnstile rotates automatically if you're exiting but locks in the other direction unless you pay. At least, I think that's how it works ... it's so quick and frictionless that it's become invisible to me

@anthonyha.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 12:15 PM

This sucks, absolutely braindead to look at traffic jams of people lining up to leave the station and think “oooh nice let’s build more of these” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/n...

I worry in the next few years we're all going to have to have some patient, complicated conversations with older or less media-engaged relatives who see the le epic trump takedown posts but do not stuff like this about who Gavin Newsom Really Is
