I won the failure bingo at the #DH anti-conference (co-sponsored by DHd AG #criticalDH)!
And we need to start mass-producing the project failure collectible card game šŸ˜

I totally agree, similar things have been on my mind recently but from the other side. In #DigitalHumanities, philosophy is not very well represented at all but it does seem one of the few disciplines that manages to communicate with CS somehow. I’d really like for us to start closing that gap… #DH

The researchers wrote and created a scenario in which they encouraged the LLM to roleplay as something that could feel pain. It is just this meme with extra steps and a fancy academic output.

I gave a talk this morning at Appalachian College Association Summit. It's a substantial departure for me, but one that I've had many conversations about over the years.

Talk by Chuck Pearson of Tusculum University entitled "Minimal computing: challenging unchecked use of resources in academic technology."

use of LLMs is pervasive in academia, everyone is depressed about it. but who can afford ~not~ to rely on AI? those who already hold high social capital: good English, good schools, good networks. For everyone else the 'baseline' is already far out of reach without LLMs

the whole structure of academic value, i think, will change, but not in a way that would flatter most of us; it's hard not to imagine that devaluation of writing leads to strengthening of face-to-face prestige and reputation institutes, social codes, retrofuturistic zombie version of university

How do Computational Literary Studies ( #CLS) have a "disciplineness" that other subfields of DH do not?
And what are us others missing out on because we don't? šŸ¤”

Would love to hear your thoughts about processes of (sub-)discipline formation within the #DH!

Word embeddings alone are not the be-all end-all for historical data: semantic changes over time trip them up šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

BUT have you heard of contextual word embeddings? šŸ‘€

In this article, we use them to untangle the meanings of terms Ruland's 1612 alchemical dictionary.
