MALVINA is not just a method for us, but a story of questions, teamwork, coffee and millions of cells.
We wrote down how the project grew from one simple question into a @natcomms.nature.com study.

What can MALVINA be used for?
Beyond measuring whether bacteria survive, MALVINA shows what they do to human cells. This single-cell, machine-learning approach could support pathogen profiling, probiotic discovery, drug testing and virulence-aware toxicity studies.

Across millions of cells, we show that virulence is not always a fixed trait of a strain. It is shaped by host cells, neighbouring microbes and drugs. Huge thanks to Terézia Kovács, Bence Bognár, Szilvia Juhász and all co-authors!
MALVINA combines high-content microscopy and machine learning to follow infection cell by cell: which cells bacteria enter, how strongly they accumulate, and whether they cause DNA damage. Across millions of cells, very different infection patterns emerged.
Counting bacteria is not enough.
To understand what makes a bacterium dangerous, we need to see what it actually does when it meets human cells.
Our MALVINA study is now out in @natcomms.nature.com

Some scientific connections are even better in person! 🇵🇹
At #GIMMFest, our lab members Bognár Bence and Nándor Kovács presented their research, exchanged ideas with Roy Kishony and finally met our consortium partner @isabelgordo.bsky.social.
Great science, great people! 🦠✨
We study antibiotic interactions, evolution of resistance, virulence and host–pathogen interactions — from invading host cells to damaging DNA. Hello, Bluesky! Web:https://lazargroup.start.page/
