On #WorldFoodDay, we remember that access to food is a matter of justice and dignity. No one should face hunger, destitution, or barriers to meeting their basic needs while navigating the asylum system.

Tayeb is one of many children we've supported after being wrongly identified as adults and detained. No child should experience detention. In fact, detention has a devastating impact on people and should have no place in our asylum system at all. Read our newsletter: www.jrsuk.net/autumn2026/

Tayeb* was just 16 when he fled Sudan and came to the UK seeking safety. When his age was wrongly recorded, he was detained at Harmondsworth IRC and treated as an adult. With support from our Detention Outreach Team, he secured an age assessment and was eventually released into care.

A particular focus of the lecture was the treatment of young people whose ages are disputed by authorities. Citing recent data, she said that of 1,897 people assessed as adults over a six-month period, 442 decisions were later overturned, with hundreds of cases still awaiting resolution.

@jrsuk.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 3:00 PM

Speaking at the inaugural JRS UK Annual Lecture yesterday, Dame Rachel challenged policymakers & the wider public to place children at the centre of conversations about migration, and to resist the increasingly polarised rhetoric surrounding people seeking safety.

Dame Rachel de Souza @childrenscomm.bsky.social calls for truth, compassion and better safeguarding of children seeking asylum, warning: “The nation that fails to value childhood fails to value anything at all.”

At JRS UK, we see the impact of these decisions on young people seeking safety. Every child deserves protection, dignity and a fair assessment of their needs.

@jrsuk.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 12:29 PM

According to analysis she is expected to present, at least 23% of Home Office age-assessment decisions were later overturned. Behind these figures are children who risk being wrongly treated as adults and denied the protections they are entitled to.
