Here we go...

Always love doing a session for the EMC and this time I get to talk about social media and language change, and why we need to stop uncritically embracing labels like 'TikTok Language' 👌

There's still a bit of time to book your place on this course which will feature @christianilbury.bsky.social & me. We'll be looking at how & why language changes, technology & change, as well as media discourses around change. It will be a packed and fun day. No cap, as no one my age should say.

Social media is far from perfect, but it provides important community spaces for autistic young people. Rather than restricting young people's access, we argue that it's the platforms themselves that need to change. Read our new piece in the Conversation:

I will be taking the stage in leather trousers and asking the assembled crowds if they are, in fact, 'ready to rock', as I introduce the first speaker.

Yesterday we announced that our emagazine AL English Literature conference was fully booked. Today we need to tell you that the emagazine AL English LANGUAGE conference is fully booked. That's nearly 2000 students + their teachers to welcome at these two events next month!

@englangblog.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 9:44 AM

And it has sold out in about 24 hours. Blimey.

This is coming soon from @engmediacentre.bsky.social ! Largely the work of the stylistics gurus @stockwell.bsky.social and @jessnorledge.bsky.social with some classroom tips (and 'can you make that even simpler for people like me' requests) from me, it should be an excellent resource. More soon.

Is there an upper limit to how many you can do in a double lesson?

In this post I study 'going rogue' as a dominant/hegemonic metaphor and some counter- or polemic metaphors - contains blenders, Glocks, robot dogs and some serious metaphor debunking #AI #linguistics #metaphor makingsciencepublic.com/2026/10/02/r...

This is an excellent article by Leif Wetherby - why AI is a cultural technology not a collection of human-like agents (citing our work on this). And why the anthropomorphism is a distraction from the very real risks and dangers and the way to deal with them.

Every time a coworker mentions using an LLM for work, I take the rest of the day off. Why should I do the work if they're not going to?

Lots of good speakers at this conference (and me). You can book until Wednesday this week: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rethinking...

I'm speaking at Rethinking Language Conference Saturday 10 October, Aston University, Birmingham.
