A quick thank you for the many responses to our efforts towards better accessibility in the area, from this post and others here and on Facebook. We’re going through that feedback and will raise the key issues with LCCC members, local councillors and Council officers at our October meeting

🎉 Good to share something cheerful here! We’ve had a lot of posts recently about things that aren’t working as they should - now, photos from last month’s Stead’s Place Street Party ☀️ Well done to the local residents who once again organised such a brilliant community day, with decent weather too

1/ 💷 Got an idea for Leith? There’s up to £5,000 available, but the deadline is close. Applications for the latest round of Leith Chooses close on Monday 12 October. It is participatory budgeting, which means local groups apply and people across Leith vote for the projects they want funded.

We're not sure, we will ask for clarifications. Maybe @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social has more info?

4/ LCCC worked with Alan and others for some time to identify problems along Leith Walk and press for improvements, including issues around continuous footways, tactile paving and crossings. Accessibility isn’t just about getting the original design right, repairs and maintenance have to preserve it

@leithcentralcc.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 9:01 AM

3/ For continuous footways to work safely, they need to make it clear that: • 🚶 pedestrians are continuing along the pavement • 🚗 drivers are crossing pedestrian space • 👩‍🦯 the layout is predictable and understandable for visually impaired people

@leithcentralcc.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 9:00 AM

2/ One recurring issue is continuous footways, where the pavement continues across a side-road junction. But the layout should be consistent. A section of footway has been repaired with black tarmac: instead of the pavement, it now looks more like the road continues through

1/ ♿ When is a pavement no longer obviously a pavement?
Accessibility on Leith Walk was discussed again at our September meeting, following this article featuring LCCC member Alan, who is blind and has worked with us to highlight problems:

3/ This funding has supported projects like Leith Runs Together’s Junior Parkrun (Pilrig Park) and Pilmeny Development Project tackling isolation among older people So if your organisation has an idea, now’s the time. 📅 Deadline: Monday 12 October 💷 Up to £5,000 🗳️ Leith residents vote in Jan 2027

@leithcentralcc.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 3:30 PM

2/ This year’s theme is “GREATER LEITH HARMONY”, supporting projects that bring people together, create a sense of belonging and strengthen connections across Leith. Constituted groups can apply for up to £5,000, and partnerships are welcome too.

5/ LCCC isn’t recommending whether anyone should invest, but we thought residents might be interested to know that the opportunity exists.

4/ ⚠️ It is also an investment, not a savings account. Your money is committed for the long term, it may be difficult to sell the investment early, and it is not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

@leithcentralcc.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 3:20 PM

3/ The current investment pays 4.84% interest a year, with interest paid every six months. The term is five years, with the original capital due to be repaid at maturity in December 2031. This isn’t a donation. It is a loan to City of Edinburgh Council, arranged through Abundance Investment.

@leithcentralcc.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 3:20 PM

2/ The first £1 million raised will support projects including: 🌳 tree planting 💧 rain gardens and sustainable drainage 🌧️ measures for flood risk 🌿 improving biodiversity and access to green space ☀️ creating greener, cooler spaces as summers get hotter You can invest from as little as £5.

@leithcentralcc.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 3:19 PM

1/ 🌳 Could your money help plant trees and reduce flooding in Edinburgh? Edinburgh Council has launched a new Edinburgh Green Investment, allowing residents, businesses and others to lend money directly to the Council to help fund environmental projects across the city.

Yes - broadly similar request submitted (15 September) to "provide a detailed update on the status of the bridge" including "the condition of the bridge, its closure, the diversion and the future repair/replacement of the bridge" & also to request a Council officer attends the next NTBCC meeting.
