NEW GOLDFISH POST!

"For Keeps" - the only full length album by The Field Mice - was released 35 years ago today so I wrote about and around the album.

God, I still love The Field Mice.

I feel undesired, dismissed, adrift
My get-up-and-go is long gone
And the days keep dragging on
But we’ve got Arab Strap…

Tonight when the lights are going down I will surrender to the sound Tonight the sound is breaking like a wave Wish it could always feel this way And life will never be the same…

This chat prompted me to just re-read the Shop Assistants chapter in Neil Taylor’s “C86 AND ALL THAT”, where David Keegan mentions a Pastels influence to “Something To Do”. Which is a bit of a coincidence as I’m seeing The Pastels live this evening supporting Saint Etienne!

Excerpt from the book, inc “He wasn't sure, as well, whether or not the other band members even liked the song that his friend Stephen Pastel had taped and already sent to Paul Groovy, a rough take of 'Something To Dơ”Even aside from the fact that Stephen and Aggi played on ‘Something To Do', the aesthetic influence of the Pastels on Buba & The Shop Assistants is noticeable, 'the nearest reference point, as David Keegan admitted at the time. 'Something To Do', with its layer of noise rested upon a beat band intro and sparky vocal from Aggi, lives up to the 'much, much noisier/ more punk' approach Stephen Pastel had written to Paul Groovy about at the end of 1983, and anticipates the Pastels more muscular work that began in earnest with 'Million Tears'.
