Several things happened in the next six seconds, but Suguru couldn’t be exactly sure in what order:

1. The rushing blood in his ears slowed enough for Suguru to hear someone yelling.
2. Suguru realized he had fucked up.
3. He took in the state of Satoru: a busted lip, an eye socket starting to purple, blood dripping from his brow, and he was clutching his right arm.
4. Suguru realized he had seriously fucked up.
5. Satoru’s signature grin returned, and bewilderingly, he threw his head back laughing. Something is seriously fucking wrong with that boy.
6. Suguru realized he had monumentally fucked up.

He said it to end the conversation, but now he actually had to think about it. Suguru had really only known Satoru for, like, 3 months. But they had spent nearly every day together, and Suguru honestly felt like he had known him longer. And for once in his life, he actually felt… personal. With Satoru. Like he wasn’t putting up an act around him.

He’d had a few friends in his hometown, sure, but they were never super close. Not close enough for him to try to reach out to them and let them know where he was going when he left. Even among his peers, Suguru had always been something of an outcast, troubled and troublesome, plagued with the ability to see horrors no one else could.

There was always this… impossibly immense divide between him and his friends, between him and his parents, between him and the rest of the world.

The same impassable divide that Satoru managed to pass with his stupid, brash, egotistical confidence. His stupid, cocky, know-it-all act. His stupid, honest, generous heart.

When he thinks of the 2 or 3 people who would stand to be around him in middle school, all he can really remember is that divide. None of them could hold a candle to his natural connection with Satoru.

He had been trying to understand what was beyond a point of no return, while having yet to pass it.

Without having to pass it, ideally.

Satoru wasn’t naïve. He understood that some amount of sacrifice is acceptable, necessary even, for the greater good. Especially in this line of work. Even in the most idealistic of worlds, people still die. It’s just a matter of when and how from there.

But exactly how much was too much? At what point was it still for the greater good? Where was the line, and who was allowed to draw it? Could he find that line without having to pass it?

This was what his mind wandered to as he stayed awake in a beach house somewhere in Okinawa, watching over the resting forms of Kuroi and Amanai and Suguru. Sleep-deprived and fighting off hypoglycemic shock with a generous supply of sugary soft drinks.

He’d run into this moral dilemma before, but this whole situation with Riko was putting it at the forefront of his mind again.

Snippet of text from ummm another later part in the work. For context, Gojo is talking to his own subconscious after being almost killed by Toji. The actual text says:

You’ve heard the name before, tied to the idea of a Heavenly Pact of no cursed energy. It’s been floating around in your subconscious ever since.

“Is that how I got here?”

Yes, Zen’in Toji killed you.

“I’m dead?!?”

Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much! It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.

“Go through his clothes and look for loose change?”

Now you’re getting it.
This respite — you've earned it, brother. Bask in the darkness. Let it swallow you up and swivel you around while you forget everything you've managed to remember...

“No, I want to go back. I like pain and burning light and wanting things from people who don't want to give them to me.”

Summary text of fic I'm writing. The text itself says:

When Gojo Satoru was 11 years old, he ran away from home.

To be specific, it was at that age that he realized the world of jujutsu sorcery was utter bullshit.

He could see it for what it is: an eternal, futile, and ultimately meaningless struggle. He understood this battle as one he would fight for all of his days, just to have nothing left at the end of them. Pointless.

So he ran. It was his first act of protest in his ceaseless crusade to escape the cycle that was the life of a jujutsu sorcerer.

When Geto Suguru is 16 years old, his world begins to fall apart.

To be specific, it is at that age that he realizes the world of jujutsu sorcery is utter bullshit.

Exorcise. Absorb. Over and over. Repetitious, seemingly endless strife. He comes to a similar conclusion as Gojo: nothing worthwhile awaits him at the end of this marathon game of being a jujutsu sorcerer.

He plans a different crusade.
