Meeting Adjourned 9:40pm

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:32 AM

Commissioners ask for details on what they will vote on next Tuesday. Staff and Superintendent say they will try to draft a resolution and make it available before this Friday, but it could be challenging. Comm. Huling suggests postponing the resolution until Nov. 10th.

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:24 AM

Pres. Kim introduces a straw poll where commissioners give a thumbs up if they want to keep the option. Pres. Kim asks for a vote on each option. It's not visible via Zoom which commissioner voted for which option. It looks like option A was eliminated.

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:20 AM

Comm. Alexander thinks the board should make a decision today. He doesn't like option A because it keeps the uncertainty (families are guaranteed one of the schools in their zone but won't know which) versus options B or C which assign one school, their neighborhood school.

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:16 AM

Comm. Ray is not comfortable voting on options today when the survey is open until October 9 and today is not October 9. Also recalls that the district is actually short 19,000 seats not 14,000 seats because that number is based on "artificial enrollment caps".

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:13 AM

Supt. Su: The vote on October 13 will allow the district to start working with demographers, to work on the maps and other implementation. In April the board will be asked to officially approve the new policy.

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:13 AM

Pres. Kim: asks to clarify what is needed today. It sounds like the commissioners need to narrow down the 3 options to 1 or 2. Will they need to decide on 1 on October 13? How is that different from what will happen in April?

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:57 AM

Commissioner Alexander stressed the need for predictable enrollment so schools get resources upfront. He argued the new system must eliminate under-enrollment, which currently disproportionately impacts Black, Latino, and newcomer students through combo classes and staff cuts. #SFUSD

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:56 AM

Commissioner Alexander emphasized that implementation design matters, noting families want well-resourced neighborhood schools. He stated a key goal of redesigning student assignment is eliminating lottery anxiety by offering families a true guaranteed local spot. #SFUSD

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:54 AM

Fisher urged the board to anchor student assignment design in core equity principles, referencing past work by Dr. Parman. They noted broad policy alone cannot bridge resource gaps, making clear equity-focused implementation design essential. #BoardWatch #SFUSD

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:48 AM

Commissioner Gupta asked how relocating language immersion programs across neighborhood sites would work for families. SFUSD staff explained changes would likely be phased in, starting at lower grades (TK/K) to allow currently enrolled students to finish. #SFUSD

@ppssf.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:45 AM

Commissioner Ray noted Option B differs from the current system by eliminating lottery anxiety with a guaranteed local placement. However, he emphasized survey data shows strong concerns, including from African American families, about losing school choice. #SFUSD
