🧠 Why can ketamine act so rapidly in the brain?

New research has identified a brain mechanism that could help explain ketamine’s unusually rapid antidepressant effects, providing clues for the development of faster and potentially more targeted treatments for depression.

"Ketamine is particularly interesting because its antidepressant effects can emerge much faster than those of conventional antidepressants, but we still have a great deal to learn about how those effects arise in the human brain.

Our findings point to the habenula as one part of that mechanism. This small brain region plays an important role in how we respond to and learn from negative experiences, and we found that ketamine reduced its response to unpleasant events.” Dr Erdem Pulcu, Senior Researcher

What does it mean to be a #LivedExperienceScientist?

Professor Clare Mackay shares three things she's learned since revealing she lives with hair pulling disorder, a type of body-focused repetitive behaviour (BFRB), which she now researches.

“…I thought I was simply sharing something personal that might start a conversation and help a few people feel less alone. Looking back, I realise it was the start of changing the way I design, conduct and communicate science. Science helps us see patterns and test theories, and lived experience helps us focus on the questions that matter most to the people we're trying to help. We need both.” Professor Clare Mackay, Professor of Neuroscience
