Yet private firms remained more profitable. It’s a tale of two cities: stagnant SOEs are benefiting from the system, while private companies are trying to survive in this system and exporting their way out.

@aligarciaherrero.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 10:23 AM

The interest burden for central SOEs was falling faster than for private firms, reaching 2.2 per cent and 3.2 per cent, respectively, giving state firms a borrowing advantage.

Views for @scmpnews.bsky.social on #China: The duality is more complex than just exporting and not consuming. It’s really entrenched in #China’s #corporate governance. The divide was evident in the differing fortunes of central state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private firms.

My OpEd for @euractiv.com 8 months into the US-Iran war: oil shock splitting in two. West gets tighter money: euro area inflation at 3.3%, US 10y at 5.3% Bund highest since 2011. China absorbs it through weak demand: 10y at 1.67% with bank margins near record lows

My new @asia.nikkei.com column: Trump greeted Xi on the tarmac. The summit left a 2-month truce Beijing hasn't even confirmed. A shrinking truce is a leash, not a bridge. Washington now needs stability more than Beijing does.

@aligarciaherrero.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 12:36 PM

This reflects Beijing’s prioritisation of technological leadership and manufacturing strength.

@aligarciaherrero.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 12:36 PM

China pours extraordinary resources into AI, robotics, EVs, batteries and other strategic technologies. But it is being financed in part by financially repressed households: cheap captive savings, weak wage growth and a consumption share of GDP that remains far too low for an economy of this size.

@aligarciaherrero.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 12:36 PM

Views for @scmpnews.bsky.social: This contradiction is #China’s “dual economy”: one side produces world-class technology and exports, while the other is characterised by stagnant household incomes and weak consumption.
