Hey, want to learn a Lake District history fact? Did you know you can sometimes tell where Norse people lived in the Lake District because of local place names? Names ending in –by such as Ireby mean village. Those ending in –thwaite, like Satterthwaite, mean clearing.

Good morning from Eskdale, one of the National Park's 13 valleys, where mountains plunge almost directly to the sea. It's rainy and cool, so please remember to bring your waterproofs, wear warm and insulating clothes and have a change of dry clothes for after you adventures.

Back in August, our Learning and Engagement and World Heritage teams joined forces to attend Patterdale Dog Day in search of local history. The aim was to uncover stories, memories and family connections surrounding Greenside Mine in the Patterdale valley. Let us know if you have any to share!

Taking lunch with you on a hike in the Lake District National Park? Please note that you may not find a bin while out on your adventure. This is your reminder to take all your litter home with you. This includes general waste, dog poo and anything else that wasn't there before you visited.

Now, where's the bin?a sunny picture of fields with mountains in the background and a blue sky with on screen text reading - there's not a bin herea view down Trooutbeck looking over green fields and trees down a valley with on screen text reading - or over therea group of people walking down a mountain with a view of a lake with on screen text reading - not a problem, I'll take my litter home with me instead. #Leave No Trace

Sometimes, a dog is all you need to make you smile.🐕‍🦺 Keep your dog safe, as well as livestock and native wildlife, by keeping them on a lead on the fells in the Lake District National Park. Your dog's waste is your responsibility, so pick up any poo and take it with you.

Did you know? You can find stone circles in the Lake District. During the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age (2,500-1,500 BC), people built monuments such as stone circles in prominent places. We don’t know why, but it seems that people wanted to make a mark on the land that others could see.
