⚠️ The chemicals in commonly used plastic items pose a serious and ever-present risk to human health - yet they remain unregulated and unmonitored.
Hormone disruption is just one of the many risks. Hear from Dr Stephanie Wright, @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social 🎬
🐟 The future of EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is currently under discussion. To weaken the CFP would mean undermining the EU’s credibility and hard-won progress. EU Member States should focus on stronger implementation, not a lowering of standards. Read the op-ed from Ambassador Peter Thomson:

Despite the fact that Chausey is a marine protected area, its maerl beds continue to be degraded by dredging and bottom trawling. What is lost today cannot be rebuilt within a generation. We are taking action to ensure these habitats are protected in practice, not just on paper.
Maerl beds shelter marine life, acting as nurseries for commercially important species. These fragile habitats take centuries to form, yet can be crushed in minutes by bottom-towed fishing gear.
🪸 Join us below the waters of the Chausey archipelago to witness one of the most remarkable and least-known habitats in the English Channel - maerl beds. Our new short film includes underwater footage of maerl and the voices of people whose futures are bound up in this ‘pink treasure’.
We are calling on governments to support a strong, legally-binding Global Plastics Treaty which cuts plastic production and controls the most dangerous chemicals at their source. Protecting people from toxic harm is not a technical detail to be bargained away; it is the whole point.
This is not a problem people can solve through their own choices alone. The chemicals are present across thousands of ordinary products, most of them in the form of plastics, yet often unlabelled and invisible. The responsibility to act sits with industry and governments. Read the report:
These chemicals are in our food, homes and children's bodies, and almost none of them are controlled. Children are especially vulnerable, with exposure linked to attention disorders, cancer and lifelong reproductive harm. Watch the full film:
🚨 Public health announcement 🚨 We investigated chemicals in everyday plastic items and found something alarming: 92.8% pose a high risk to human health.
The Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency sets out a practical and low-cost set of principles that governments and industry can implement now. “What it needs is political will; it needs engagement from communities, and it needs us all to come together to do it collectively.”
“We want to see legal, sustainable, and ethical seafood on our plates and in our markets.”
Yesterday, EJF CEO and Founder Steve Trent spoke on a panel at OPAGAC’s Hands for the Ocean in @europarl.europa.eu.
He called for transparency to end #IUU fishing and human rights abuses at sea.
We’re making the case for a world where the products we use are safe by design. Governments must cut plastic production and control the most dangerous chemicals at source. Everyone should feel safe knowing that the cup they drink from and the toy their child holds will not make them ill.
The chemicals inside commonly used plastic products, from food containers and coffee cups to children's toys, threaten human health on a vast scale. More than half of these high-risk chemicals are not regulated at the international level or countries we reviewed. This is a public health emergency.
⚠️ The plastic we live with every day is quietly poisoning us ⚠️ We’ve released our shocking research: 92.8% of the chemicals we assessed in everyday plastic items are linked to cancer, infertility and heart disease. Almost none are controlled.
"We never chose this, and we should have the right to reduce our exposure to plastics."
Great overview in film of a new report on plastics from an environmental justice perspective by the @ejfoundation.org that I'm very pleased to have contributed to

Thank you to our hosts, speakers and fellow NGOs, and to everyone who joined us. The Ocean Act proposal is due by the end of 2026. We will keep pushing for it to deliver 💙
