The review found little evidence that conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have become more common. However, it stresses that people with severe and enduring mental illness continue to experience some of the poorest outcomes in society and often do not receive adequate support.
People rarely have a single mental health condition & neurodiversity increases the risk of someone developing a mental illness. Systems organised around single diagnoses (Including research) do not meet people's needs. Services need to respond to individuals rather than diagnostic categories. 4/5
The report shows what we have long known, common mental health conditions have risen substantially. Young people, particularly young women have experienced the largest rise & this cannot be explained solely by better awareness or reduced stigma. We need research to understand the reasons why. 3/5
Research is what will help identify: 🟡 The causes of ill-health 🟡 What early interventions are most effective at preventing symptoms developing 🟡 How services can be improved to stop people reaching crisis 🟡 The treatments that are most effective so people can live happier, healthier lives 2/5
The prevalence report published today shows that the question we should be asking is not 'are conditions like ADHD and autism being over diagnosed?' The real question is 'how can we provide the right support, at the right time, based on need rather than waiting for diagnostic confirmation?' 🧵1/5
