Blidha Imvepi is a participant in the Geared For Success project, funded by Global Affairs Canada and Oxfam Canada, which champions education for refugee, internally displaced and host-community children in South Sudan and Uganda.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, her story is a reminder that girls deserve to learn in environments where they have the knowledge, support and dignity they need to participate fully in school.

@oxfamcanada.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:53 PM

But Blidha has also seen how education is helping change that: boys who understand can support girls, while teachers step in when teasing happens.

@oxfamcanada.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:53 PM

She told us that her favourite subject is English, especially reading stories and writing. At school, she has also learned more about menstruation and how to use menstrual pads. She spoke about the pain girls can experience during their periods, and how teasing from boys can make them feel bad.

Every girl deserves the chance to learn, grow and dream.

For 17-year-old Blidha, the school day starts early. She wakes up at 5 am and begins her journey to school at 5:30. We spoke with her back in March at a school for refugee students in Terego, Uganda.

A year after the October 10 agreement, the #ceasefire in Gaza is in name only.

This is not a ceasefire. The killing and deprivation in #Gaza must not be normalised under the cover of an agreement.

Who knew it could be so "radical" to want all humans to have equal rights🙃

October is Women’s History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate women and girls whose leadership, innovation, and determination shape Canada’s past and future.

Today & every day, we celebrate women 🎉

We then heard from 6 powerful speakers reflecting on their own experiences and their interaction with wealth and power. A big thank you to David Moscrop, Jared Walker, Emma Davies, Riley Yesno, Jenny Zhang and Rachel Wasserman for joining us and their fantastic speeches.

Our Executive Director, Lauren Ravon, opened the talk with a simple message: The billionaire problem didn't happen by accident. It was built by design. And anything built by design can be redesigned.

Real help for #Canadians looks more like a windfall profit tax on Canadian oil producers, which could help redistribute a small portion of those billions in excess profits.

@oxfamcanada.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 3:16 PM

While cutting taxes at the pump sounds nice, gas prices keep rising because of conflict and crisis-related shocks, leading Canadians to spend an additional $3 billion on gas between April and June alone.

@oxfamcanada.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 3:16 PM

Earlier this month, in an effort to address affordability, the government announced an extension to the gas tax holiday implemented in April.
