Next week, we're heading to Bangkok to take our message inside the annual IMF & World Bank meetings, and out onto the streets with campaigners from around the world. Join us live from Bangkok on Wednesday 14 October ➡️ act.debtjustice.org.uk/rsvp-resisti... #CancelTheDebt #DebtCrisis
Come along on Friday at 2.30pm to hear our @heidichow.bsky.social discuss the rigged global debt system at @greenparty.org.uk conference with @waronwant.bsky.social @meadwaj.bsky.social
“Climate finance should be a form of compensation for the damage caused to lower income countries that have not caused the climate crisis. Instead, the vast majority of climate finance is in the form of loans, adding to debt levels."

“We don’t lack solutions, we lack justice.”
The IMF & the World Bank say Madagascar’s debt is sustainable, but young activist Dina exposes a reality in which #debt, extractivism & the #climate crisis reinforce one another.

"Rich countries that have built their wealth on climate-wrecking emissions cannot ignore the billions of dollars of damage now facing Nepal. They must urgently pay what they owe, as grants, not loans."

Vital reading from @the-independent.com on how flooding in Nepal could pile billions onto its national debt if rich countries don't pay what they owe.
As our policy adviser Tess says in the piece 👇
The devastating floods have caused billions of dollars of damage in #Nepal, and cost thousands of lives.
The countries that caused the climate emergency must provide grants to pay for the damage - not profit from high-interest loans that force Nepal into debt.
The government has announced that all private bailiffs will now have to answer to an independent regulator. This is a big win for people in debt, but people struggling with bills need support, not a bailiff at the door. Read more on the blog: debtjustice.org.uk/blog/mandato...
New from @savechildrenuk.bsky.social and @debtjustice.bsky.social the changes needed to G20 debt relief:
1 More debt relief
2 Suspension of payments during negotiations
3 Legislation to stop holdouts
4 Equal treatment of creditors
5 Faster process
Senegal is seeking debt relief through an "enhanced" G20 process.
But the G20 has done nothing to enhance the process. First key step is for the UK to pass a debt justice law.
We welcome new rules requiring bailiffs to be accredited by the sector regulator. But regulation alone won’t solve the bailiff crisis. With council tax arrears at a record £9.3bn, we need action to help people out of debt – not more harmful bailiff action.
In 2024, thousands of #Kenyans took to the streets to protest an @IMFNews-imposed bill that would have introduced new taxes to pay external creditors
Okoth was among them
For him #TheRealCostOfDebt touches every aspect of Kenyan life

In Nairobi, an empty highway towers above the city - a visual reminder of how foreign creditors impose their will on government spending leaving everyday Kenyans to foot the bill.
Okoth says that enough is enough! This is #TheRealCostOfDebt

🇸🇳⚽ Senegal is on the world stage tonight, but back home it's facing a far harder match. More than 40% of their government spending goes to unjust debt. Money that should reach hospitals and schools goes to lenders, under rules written in their favour. act.debtjustice.org.uk/tackle-unjus...
Private lenders just squeezed an extra $65 million out of Zambia.
A country where almost half of the population doesn't have electricity.
