He had cancer of the spine, had his leg amputated earlier this year, trying to remove the tumour, but it came back very aggressive and it was terminal. Other Holmes portrayers have done good or less jobs but Jeremy Brett's Holmes to us represents what Doyle wanted for his detective. We watch the episodes regularly and own them all on DVD.
