On Oct 27 at 4P ET, linguists at different career stages will have a conversation about applying for jobs amid anti-trans & anti-queer legislation, being visibly out in research & classrooms, finding community, & putting queer & trans issues at the center of our work. www.lsadc.org/ev_calendar_...
Thanks for posting about this! These don't appear to have been well advertised (this is my first time seeing this series)
The Linguistics Association of Great Britain recently held their annual conference at University of Edinburgh and have an ongoing series of events for the coming academic year @lagbling.bsky.social
agreed!!! an absolute life skill, too.
Always love doing a session for the EMC and this time I get to talk about social media and language change, and why we need to stop uncritically embracing labels like 'TikTok Language' 👌
Great piece!!! On the benefits of social media: I think this about LGBTQ+ spaces -- the way that my life would be super different if I hadn't have found several online platforms that helped me find community. I worry v much about increasing social media restrictions on minority groups 🙃
Social media is far from perfect, but it provides important community spaces for autistic young people. Rather than restricting young people's access, we argue that it's the platforms themselves that need to change. Read our new piece in the Conversation:
We are launching our Graduate School Application Financial Aid Program (www.queerinai.com/grad-app-aid) for 2026-2027. We’ll give up to $750 per person to LGBTQIA+ STEM scholars applying to graduate programs. Apply at openreview.net/group?id=Que.... Donate to at www.paypal.com/donate/?host...
Was teaching about the shift towards performativity/social-constructivist perspectives in sociolinguistics yesterday and a student posted this meme on our course page. Fairly accurate representation of first wave --> third wave sociolinguistics. n.b., /n/ refers to (ING) variation.
We're looking for up to four new members to join the CogSci Society Student Committee. You can apply from anywhere in the world 🌎🌍🌏 You just need to be: • A CSS member; • Enrolled in a PhD program (or a Master’s program with the expectation of continuing to a PhD). Check out the details 👇🧵
On this: Pleeeeeease, for the love of God, have a clear profile picture. The amount of times I want to meet/talk to someone at a conference and their profile picture/online presence is a penguin or an abstract image.
🗣️ I'm hiring! To support my ESRC-funded project 'Accent Bias and Domestic Abuse Victimisation (ABDAVic)', I'm hiring a 12-month fixed-term research fellow.
Oh cool! I'll keep an eye out for it :)
Congrats!!! Looks super interesting 👌
⭐ NEW PAPER ⭐ "The neurotypical listening subject in autistic young people's accounts of participation in online affinity spaces," by @nelya-kot.bsky.social, @martinevandriel.bsky.social, Flo Bremner, and me, is now published in Language and Society. Very excited to finally see this online.
I'd say Coupland (2007), yeah! Especially as that covers stylisation too.
Great initiative! I'd propose: Style, stylisation, and enregisterment
The podcast links to work I've been doing with student societies at UoE, and our recent paper in AL which I posted about last week. More info: accentbias.ed.ac.uk
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak to @scotnational.bsky.social about how universities are failing to tackle accent bias and classism on campus. This is in the wake of depressing stories about accent bias, linguistic discrimination and classism at St Andrews
