There’s something about putting an idea on paper and sticking it somewhere people can’t avoid seeing it. Women have been doing it for generations, and we want to keep making work in that tradition.

RADICAL PRINT. THE ART OF PROTEST. ✊ We have a soft spot for a protest poster - and let’s face it, there’s quite a lot to protest about right now.

Every 2nd month we create a beautiful, artist-designed or handcrafted merch that our subscribers receive in the post.  Inspired by the changemakers of the past, with bold, feminist designs for the activists of today.

Marion Wallace Dunlop was one of many suffrage activists who were artists, illustrators, writers, musicians, actors — who all used their craft to demand their rights.  Our Creative Catalyst tier on P&S Patreon, allows us to work towards the same.

Her text quotes the 1689 Bill of Rights, and was stamped onto the House of Commons using a stencilling device she made herself – yes we said SHE MADE A RUBBER-STAMPING DEVICE, and then used it to GRAFITTI THE HOUSE OF COMMONS!  She was innovative, brilliant – and created with purpose.

According to The Times, Marion printed a notice that read: ‘Women's Deputation. June 29. Bill of Rights. It is the right of the subjects to petition the King, and all commitments and prosecutions for such petitionings are illegal.’

No one knew it better than Marion Wallace Dunlop, who in 1909 was charged ‘with wilfully damaging the stonework of St. Stephen's Hall, House of Commons, by stamping it with an indelible rubber stamp, doing damage to the value of 10s.’

FeministFriday: Art of Protest (suffragette case study who was an artist) Marion W Dunlop The Suffragettes understood the power of creativity.  They knew how to create beautiful artwork, and harness it to further their cause.
