Why this matters for human medicine: Many bat species live up to 40 years and have a resistance to severe diseases. By mapping the ancestral genome, this research gives scientists a roadmap to study genes tied to immunity, disease resistance and healthy aging in humans. (6/7)

@stonybrooku.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:31 PM

Building this dataset took decades of field sample collection around the world. The project covered everything from Thailand’s tiny bumblebee bats (one of Earth's smallest mammals) to Madagascar’s sucker-footed bats, which use wrist suction pads to cling to leaves. (5/7)

@stonybrooku.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:31 PM

The study also solved a classic question: Which came first, flight or echolocation? By analyzing the ancient fossil Vielasia, Prof. Dávalos's team proved that echolocation evolved alongside powered flight near the very dawn of bat history. (4/7)

@stonybrooku.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:31 PM

Working through Bat1K (a global effort of 137 scientists across 64 countries), the team analyzed 103 living bat genomes alongside 44 fossil species. Their findings officially overturned longstanding hypotheses, revealing that bats originated in Europe 65 million years ago. (3/7)

@stonybrooku.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:31 PM

For decades, scientists debated where bats originally evolved, pointing to Asia, Africa or North America. Because fossil evidence alone couldn't settle the debate, Dávalos and an international team set out to combine ancient fossils with cutting-edge genomics. (2/7)

We're thrilled to share that research co-led by SBU's Prof. Liliana M. Dávalos is on this month's cover of @nature.com!

Her team's global study rewrites 65M years of bat evolution, solving long-standing mysteries about how, where & when they took flight.

Here’s how they did it 🧵👇 (1/7)
