My goals are to reduce smoking-related DEATH and reduce teen nicotine USE. Both involve change. To change something, you need to be able to measure it...

CDC reports show nicotine vapes are now, by far, the most commonly used smoking cessation tools in America. I think it's time we rethink use of that word "addiction." Official definitions boil down to: ADDICTION = DEPENDENCE + HARM Coffee is dependence-forming but no harm, so not "addictive."

What this shows yet again is whole new generation of tobacco control activists is addicted to unscrupulous dishonesty and reported enthusiastically by media

When JUUL launched in 2015, it was not legally allowed to tell adults the truth: "This is safer and may help you quit smoking." So the external marketting firm JUUL hired for the launch went with lifestyle ads showing happy attractive 20-something models. And teen vaping dropped 30% by 2016-2017.

Your statement is not correct in my country. US adult nicotine use is not changing, but the SOURCE is changing dramatically from deadly to safer. Teen nicotine use has dropped to a 50-year low (it dropped 50% over the past 15 years). Teen daily use is near nil.

2nd hand smoke harms have only EVER been shown to cause modest harm in never-smokers who LIVE with a smoker for DECADES. Smoke lingers in a room 40 min. 2nd hand vapor evaporates in 20 seconds, and is FAR safer than cigarette smoke. Your ban has no public health rationale. It is just pure spite.

The latest report from the Cochrane systematic evidence review of 104 studies including 61 RCTs involving >30,300 participants in over a dozen countries shows 67% of smokers who try to quit by vaping succeed. I suspect that number would be higher if they were not wildly misinformed about the risks.

After FDA banned 'flavored' pod-based nicotine vapes in February 2020 on Trump's orders, over 12 million adults shifted en masse to 'flavored' disposable vapes. Sales of those "illicit" vapes skyrocketed... while teen nicotine vaping dropped 74%. Sorry for the busy graph, but a lot happened.

I apologize for intruding, but here is what CDC/FDA surveys actually show happened over the past 6 years.

My point is that what the media is telling you and what official govt surveys show are two very different things.

#Factcheck adult use (2) and teen use (3) below from CDC/FDA.

If they are advertising to kids, they're not very good at it. You won't want to hear this, but "just think of the children" is a standard prohibitionist tactic. Oldest in the books. Adult vaping increased 110% over the past 6 years while teen vaping dropped 74%. They advertise to adults.

@chancethegardener.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:29 PM

If that's true (which I doubt), people quitting vaping by smoking is the end result of a decade of hammering the public with health misinformation about the relative risks, supposedly to protect teens. By which I mean literally lying to the public to scare teens (this is your brain on drugs stuff).

@chancethegardener.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:01 PM

I fear I am growing more blunt, but 8 years of frustrating work in tobacco control takes its toll. There seems to be some sort of blockage between what NIH and CDC/FDA surveys actually show and what US journalists tell the public. Weird, right?

Adults vaping is a very different story. In fact, teen use is the tail-wagging-the-dog. This is what is happening in the United States, Canada, the UK, Scandinavia, New Zealand, and many countries. And the media ignores these massive changes as if they don't exist..

@chancethegardener.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 6:27 PM

Behold the teen nicotine vaping "epidemic" in the USA, Canada and UK. In all three countries, the public is being told how many kids vape "at least one time in the past 30 days." The public does not know how many vape daily. These images are accurate. Ask if you want links to official surveys.
