Another good example is Ho Chi Minh. Important to understand that Ho Chi Minh was not originally a violent revolutionary, and tried peaceful ways. In the end, he was first pushed to Maoism by Western intransigence. He was then pushed further to violence by the same intransigence.

The charpai, South Asia's rope-woven bed, stays cool in hot climates thanks to an open weave of jute, cotton or coconut fiber that artisans pattern into diamonds, stripes and grids.

Violent resistance has been the way in more cases, non-violent resistance has had a more limited applicability but has sometimes worked. I think, more often than not, violent and non-violent methods have gone hand in hand to support the same outcome. I can respect both positions.

I think a great many historical revolutionaries have struggled with this question of violent vs non-violent resistance, and as you say some have gone back and forth between the two - like Mandela. It is a difficult question. Circumstances/context are key when thinking about the appropriate way.

Thames Water line up former Labour minister John Hutton as chairman, as it tries to win over the govt. Hutton left the govt after the expenses and lobbying scandals. Now pursued by TW to fix things politically, TW is financially, environmentally bankrupt.

The Energy Secretary says North Sea drilling “won’t take a penny off energy bills.” The Health Secretary says summer heatwaves put pressure on the NHS. So where’s the Government’s impact assessment? If they don’t have one, they should delay the decision on drilling for oil & gas until they do.

So BBC Scotland is being axed. On the one hand, gobsmacking. On the other hand, given the neoliberal policy pretensions of Westminster and their spending priorities - it isn’t shocking at all.

Another case where the UK is providing "defensive support" to a country that is actually the aggressor. When you defend an aggressor, you are robbing the right of the victim to self-defence. Important to understand that Saudi Arabia actually started the current hostilities, not vice-versa.

Among Keir Starmer's worst deeds were his legislative and rhetorical attacks on nature protection. In those two wasted years, we spiralled backwards, even from the Tory legacy. At this week's biodiversity summit, the Burnham govt should pledge to turn that round. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I think Labour, bought by political donations from billionaires and big corporates, will do as their donors command. The more of the general public who realise this will start to think differently about their MPs, and start to demand they act for the public; or else!

Will Labour next week in the budget tell us sad stories about "difficult decisions" and how there's "no money left?" Or will this Labour Government challenge the broken economic thinking that has lead us to this place? And tax the assets of multimillionaires & billionaires? 👀

90% of England’s water industry is foreign-owned, including entities linked with the Chinese state. The result is low investment, high bills, sewage in rivers, over 1,200 criminal convictions, harms to nature, health and national security. Public ownership is needed. Watch the Minister's reply.

Burnham too is deluded on this issue. He might think he's playing nice, but he's opening the door to the nastiest elements, who *will* come to dominate if they can simply buy persuasion, in the way that Bolsonaro's backers have done in Brazil. By refusing to cap, he's signing Labour's death warrant.

By and large we don't get the governments we deserve; we get the governments funders pay for. As in the US, UK politics is becoming dominated by huge spending. The result is *inevitably* to push us rightwards. The unions' position is breath-takingly blinkered. They will never win the funding race.
