During the pandemic, Martinez helped establish the People's Kitchen at El Compadre restaurant in the Italian Market, which provided over 100,000 free meals.

In 2015, Martinez and her former husband opened a permanent restaurant called South Philly Barbacoa - and in 2016, Bon Appétit magazine named it one of the top 10 best new restaurants in the U.S.

Martinez left Mexico to escape domestic violence and came to the United States. She found a job in Philadelphia as a pastry chef in an Italian restaurant.

Our next Hispanic Heritage Month Highlight is Cristina Martinez, a Mexican chef and immigration activist in Philadelphia. Martinez grew up in Capulhuac de Mirafuentes in Mexico, where she learned barbacoa preparation from her father.

Our children don’t need teachers that can create lesson plans faster thanks to AI software. What they need are educators who are not dependent on AI but instead use it as another tool in their arsenal to help inspire young minds and get their students engaged in their lessons.
