It's also a question of space ( and also age I guess) plus: how many live nearby and not several hundred kilometers away - we had this in the 80s,when we had a house we huge gardens etc. As soon as you live in an apartment the rules change.

Btw I recently had a museum's tour (an AI museum) and certain aspects of actual AI sound very similar to this problem.

It also points out the problem: Hal was programmed to keep the mission objectives of the Discovery a secret - the crew had no idea about the actual mission. So, logically from Hal's perspective, the only way to keep it a secret was...kill the crew.

In 2010 the AI's have psychologists, like Hal 9000 has Dr. Chandra (Bob Balaban) - at least they were thinking "If there's an AI that may go crazy, we better have a shrink for the damn thing."

2010 is actually a pretty good scifi film. I like how "Mr Didkovich" Elya Baskin is sitting right next to Roy Scheider (a very German sounding name btw esp bc it's spelled with "sch" for "sh") - and Hellen Mirren plays the Russian captain.

One issue is that they don't have multiple seasons secured from the start which would shorten production time like months or even years - instead they have to wait for the season to release, see if the numbers are satisfying the executives, then go into production.

It just takes wayyyy to long for like 8 episodes that are partially shorter than the average episode in the 90s. Granted, these have a higher production value looking like movies but they should streamline this better.
