Winston brings to mind Rowley Birkin QC (m.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hbx...)

I met ppl like this while doing my research into the reception of RW culture wars - they took transgressive pleasure in racism, sexism, anti-trans discourse (grateful 4 validation by politicians/media), shared belief in a ‘threatened majority’ status + an all-encompassing ‘anti-woke’ spectre.

One of my questions was about joining #Etū - as this is a highly unionised workplace (but only part of it, and not the part I'll be working in hahaha). Guess I'll be the only union member in my part of the office then ....

The mindset of employers rn. I've been offered a role (yay). I've carefully read contract, emailed questions + requested one small change. Was just rung - why haven't I signed? Well I'm waiting to hear back! Why wld I sign a contract on which I'm awaiting clarifications? They sounded startled 🤔

There's a straight line of performative political cruelty from compulsory drug tests for beneficiaries to ... this. (How long that line is depends on how far we allow our political leaders to continue to mimic a failing state, the US.)

If you really want to get "more people off welfare and into work", consider not tanking the economy. That typically works better than performative cruelty.

The party also promised:
to provide "intensive, work-focused support" for 30,000 jobseekers who have been on Jobseeker for more than a year, with more funding for employment programmes that support young people into work.
lowering the rate of payment for those who had been on the benefit for two of the previous three years, from 1 April 2028. There would be a smaller reduction for households with dependent children.
those who repeatedly leave employment without good and sufficient reason would face a 26-week non-entitlement period, up from 13 weeks.
from 1 April 2028, the minimum residence period to qualify for main benefits will increase from two years to five years.
Upston said the party was focused on "getting more people off welfare and into work".

The SPCA 2026 election priorities scorecard, assessing where the different political parties stand on key animal welfare issues. Top three parties for animals: Animal Justice Party, Greens, Opportunity. At the bottom: National worst, narrowly ACT next, then what looks like a tie between NZ First and Labour (many 'no position' or 'stance unclear' for these four.) OMG - absolute ditto. Also felt that their collective, jaded ‘meh’ summation completely dismissed the reported (albeit unscientific, etc) ratings of the undecided studio audience; very ‘beltway pundits always know best.’

Woke white women are one target since someone at a public meeting put him in his place, but believe me he hates brown women much, much more.

@altnamackin.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 2:34 AM

This guy is a racist, misogynist, ex-cop, fake 'Christian' who nearly became Hastings Mayor (there's a nasty voter base gagging for this sh*te). Dangerous rhetoric eg sics his followers on 'woke white women'. May get in on the NZF list where he can sink back into obscurity, doing Winston's bidding.

I've progressed to the 'next stage' in the quest for a part-time, fixed-term non-senior comms role. After two hour long interviews (Stages 1 and 2), Stage 3 (no offer doc yet!) involves: MoJ check ✅ Reference checks ✅ And ... two hours of psychømetric testing. Any tips/insights appreciated. 😱

@altnamackin.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 4:39 AM

Yes. We're done with the performative weirdness, the sectarian wa-hey!, the old-school mateyness, the attempts to impose self-defined 'norms', the sweaty urine-soaked boozing after marches. Great to see this.

@altnamackin.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 3:29 AM

So Labour what the actual f*ck are you thinking?? Little old me tucked away in Hastings sees these guys for what they are (it's not difficult) so ... with all the resources and research at your disposal WHY are you giving any oxygen to these bad faith artists?
