Henrico County courts will be closed Monday, Oct. 12 for the state holiday. Henrico government offices and facilities will be open and will operate on their regular schedule.

To receive support from the Henrico Christmas Mother, participants must apply in person at 360 Dabbs House Road on one of the following dates with required documents: - Monday, Oct. 12 - Saturday, Oct. 17 - Monday, Oct. 19 - Monday, Oct. 26

Before the holidays, qualifying individuals and families will be able to tour the organization’s warehouse to “shop” the items for their household.

Departments organize bake sales, chili cook-offs, Jack-o-lantern contests, carnival games, toy collections and other events to connect coworkers while helping neighbors in need. Last year, county employees raised over $22,000 and collected hundreds of clothes, toys, furniture, groceries and more.

The Henrico Christmas Mother is a nonprofit organization established in 1942. The county has been a longtime partner, with employees volunteering their time and donations in support of the program's motto, “neighbors helping neighbors.”

Vithoulkas continued, “in some places, people are hurting, and the efforts that you are undertaking are going to make a very, very real difference, so I just want to say 'thank you.'”

“I can tell you from meetings that I've had with agency heads and the Board of Supervisors that the need is probably greater than it's been in a very long time, with reductions made to services at the federal level that people have relied on,” County Manager John A. Vithoulkas said.

With construction well underway, a 60-bed treatment and recovery center is targeted to open in fall 2027 on Henrico's Eastern Government Center campus. The 31,479-square-foot facility will be operated by Pyramid Healthcare at no cost to Henrico under a 30-year lease agreement.

The division implements countywide environmental management programs in accordance with local, state and federal laws and regulations to protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for Henrico residents.

The Environmental Services Division works to promote environmental conservation and awareness, as well as minimize the environmental impacts of any projects.

The event will include live bugs, including bees, cockroaches and tarantulas, as well as displays, crafts, vendors and more. Experts will share information on a variety of bug-related subjects including pollinators, garden insects, forest pests and public health.

The Henrico County Department of Public Works’ Environmental Services Division will host the 2026 Bug Bizarre on Saturday, Oct. 10 to share the joy of bugs with the community. The free, family friendly event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9910 Ridgefield Parkway.
