The Donkey and the Engineering Dean
Had another nice visit with my budonkey. He was in a great mood. Lots of smiling and laughing. Got to hear some pretty dumb donkey jokes from Protege.

Last night we had another wonderful Pizza with Professors event, rotating early career faculty members from table to table to speak about their work and answer questions from members of our amazing Dean’s Executive Committee (external advisory board).
New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns, who tragically lost his 58-year-old mum and several family members to COVID-19 complications, continues advocating for vaccination. “I have asthma,” Towns said, highlighting his “high-risk status” while raising awareness of the non-mRNA NUVAXOVID vaccine.
60 years ago today, Bob Dylan played Carnegie Hall and introduced his new touring band—Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Levon Helm. Soon, the world would know them simply as The Band.
When your engineering college is so cool that your faculty form a band named The Technically Hip and rock at the staff and faculty fall social.
Always enjoy the running of the first year students each year during a @ucdavis.bsky.social football game.
Kudos to Dr. Susan Gentry for this important initiative! Our @ucdavisengineering.bsky.social community cares deeply about the wellness of our students. 👇🏻

The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.
Today was Moove-In day for new students moving into the dorms @ucdavis.bsky.social. I met a lot of new students to the @ucdavisengineering.bsky.social. Really wonderful to meet them and their parents/families. Here is a group revving up to be future engineers in several different majors.

On and off the field, Roberto Clemente embodied class and humanitarianism.
The Hall of Fame joins the baseball community in celebrating The Great One today and every day. #ClementeDay
My favorite player as a child, and by all accounts as extraordinary a person as he was at the plate and on the field. A life cut short during a humanitarian act.
Glaciologist @matthias-huss.bsky.social shows that the centre of the Great Aletsch glacier in Switzerland (the biggest in the Alps) lost 6 meters(!) of thickness just this summer. "No words...", he adds on LinkedIn.
A legacy that lives on. The Clemente family threw out the ceremonial first pitch tonight.
Day of the Jackal
I was going to reply earlier but was too exhausted……
54 years ago today, Roberto Clemente belted his 240th and final MLB home run with the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was a two-run homer in the seventh inning off Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) that helped the Pirates to a 6-4 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
To address the now inevitable overshoot past 1.5℃, we'll need to heavily rely on adaptive as well as mitigative strategies, figure out how to generate the political will to do so, and get started NOW.
That includes getting a handle on AI.
