Good one with instar. This would be my offering, Iberina candida. A rare Hahniid of hot dry situations at the coast...this one was found at the edge of a Dartmoor woodland!

I for instar #Arachtober as I don't have any 'I' spiders (maybe @tylanberry.bsky.social @chalkspring.bsky.social etc?) Instar is any stage in the development between moults. The instar immediately before maturity is described as being subadult. Some spiders have a set amount, others are variable.

Very cool! Great find

Tapinesthis inermis(?) from a wildlife garden in Oxfordshire - knew it was something weird in the field with its almost purplish colour and spineless legs. First for the UK if confirmed! @britishspiders.bsky.social @chalkspring.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk

The Nationally Rare Linyphiid, Minicia marginella, picked up at it’s type UK location last week.

One of the most incredible photos I have ever been sent, courtesy of Chloë James of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Seagrass Restoration Team. Yep, that's Philodromus margaritatus...under seawater using...an air bubble to breathe and move about. I am utterly speechless!! @britishspiders.bsky.social

I don't think I've ever heard "Pied Stone Spider", but I quite like it!

I was really excited to see some adult Trochosa from the Sphagnum depths of Morden Bog recently - a historic site for the mythical T. spinipalpis. Annoyingly, and unsurprisingly to be honest, all of them were T. terricola, as seems to always be the case from western bogs @britishspiders.bsky.social

Some spiders from the last few days. Anypheana numida, Liocranum rupicola the Pied Stone spider and Parasteatoda spiderlings, P.tepidariorum? Also possible new site for what is likely Helpis. For size it has a small fruit fly. @britishspiders.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk

I can imagine!

We really need to reinvigorate the word "stonking", because I can't think of any other way to say that this is an absolutely stonking beast! Araneus diadematus draped in an intense brick red. You'd be excused for mistaking it for A. alsine, as I did for a second! @britishspiders.bsky.social

Nice! Getting around very quickly this one.

Does this look ok for Anyphaena numida? Would be new for me. Off Ivy in the lane behind the house in Filton, South Glos.

@britishspiders.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social @graemelyons.bsky.social Feels like the start of Autumn - Linyphiidae season. A nice Small-horned Walckenaer (Walckenaeria corniculans) from the weekend, to start things off

No way! I looked for it there about 5 or 6 years ago, but didn't find it. Also near Manordeilo but with no luck. I did have a tired 10 year old in tow, so my time was curtailed!

@tylanberry.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 10:41 PM

Whaaaat?! Amazing!

@tylanberry.bsky.socialSep 6, 2026, 8:41 PM

Where abouts was it?

@tylanberry.bsky.socialSep 6, 2026, 8:40 PM

Not seen it since I was a kid

@britishspiders.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk A quick stop-off in Wales, to find a spider that I've yet to see in England. It always surprises me just how well such a big spider can 'hide in plain sight' on bare stone Arctosa cinerea is always a sight to behold

There are still some of our larger British species that make me stop in awe. So much so that, on seeing this Micrommata virescens in Devon last week, I forgot to take pics of all of the Dolomedes fimbriatus 🤦‍♂️ @britishspiders.bsky.social
