It was great to welcome 92 pupils from Knox Academy to the Seabird Centre last month for two days. We explored the world of rocky shore ecology, surveyed seaweeds, and explored our Discovery Experience too! A big thanks to the Hamish and Doris Crichton Charitable Trust for making this possible.

On behalf of the puffins, thanks to all those who voted🙏

In a year where our local puffin breeding numbers have been a little lower, this is a timely reminder of just how nationally iconic and loved these charismatic wee seabirds are.

We're thrilled to hear that puffins are one of the 4 UK wildlife species, chosen by the public, to be featured on the next Bank of England notes💙

Next time you hear one cackling at you from the rooftops, please spare a thought for the plight of these red-listed birds🙏🔴

In fact, herring gulls traditionally nest on cliffs and remote islands; but loss of habitat and reduction in food sources have led to these intelligent, adaptable seabirds seeking alternative urban nesting sites.

These noisy gulls are much more than just the birds that nick your chips!

October's seabird of the month is the sound of the seaside - the herring gull💙

You can find out more about how we undertake the counts in our latest blog: www.seabird.org/blog/puffin_...

@seabirdcentre.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 2:38 PM

Thanks as always to the brilliant volunteers from the Forth Seabird Group, without whom these counts would not be possible🙏

@seabirdcentre.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 2:38 PM

Through our work on the Lamb - and our partnership with @rspbscotland.bsky.social on their Craigleith and Fidra reserves – we’re striving to safeguard these spectacular seabirds for generations to come.

@seabirdcentre.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 2:38 PM

In light of the rising threats, ongoing monitoring is vital to help us understand the health of the seabirds that call our coasts home. We’ll continue to support the efforts of the amazing Forth Seabird Group who have been recording seabird populations on the islands in the Forth since 1959!

@seabirdcentre.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 2:38 PM

To protect puffin populations, it is vital that we do all we can to tackle climate change while also reducing the impact of other pressures such as invasive non-native species, unsustainable fishing practices, and offshore developments in unsuitable locations.
