I counted 68 Bogong Moths this afternoon riding down 500m of road, and you can barely reload iNaturalist fast enough for all the records coming in... In the words of one researcher quoted this week, “I just feel so lucky. I feel like we have been blessed by the moth gods.”

Israel's GovMaps has now removed this imagery from its map platform.

Here it is, in the full original resolution. The fidelity of aerial imagery really highlights the complete destruction.
Thanks to @soaratlas.bsky.social for hosting the imagery.

I was honoured to lend some thoughts during this investigation, and I'm very glad it's been released. This is an unambiguous example of the need for a more structured approach.

Tech companies need a clear framework for obscuring imagery that balances security concerns with public interest. Here, Apple has clearly become a barrier to accountability.

A BBC Verify investigation found that Apple Maps' censoring of Chinese Military and Government sites has included arbitrary detention sites in Xinjiang, including the prison where Ilham Tohti is detained. Watch the investigation.

This shows the reality of Gaza in shocking resolution. I've scraped and exported all the imagery, totalling around 2.5 billion pixels at 13cm resolution, for safe keeping, in case they decide to take this imagery offline. If this happens, keep an eye out for access.

The post-coup acceleration of mangrove destruction in Myanmar's Arakan State is remarkably distressing, and now we're seeing some of the consequences, with river erosion destroying and threatening scores of riverside homes in Kyauktaw and Minbya

For example, this is 12km downstream from the end of high-resolution imagery. This is the best (PlanetScope) coverage we presently have of this area. Yet still complete destruction.

Of the 4,300 structures potentially affected in this map, only around 1,000 are covered by Very High Resolution open imagery. 2,100 are covered at high resolution, and 1,100 are covered only at medium resolution.

Understandably, much of the initially released high-resolution open satellite imagery for the Nepal disaster has focused on the upper reaches of the valley, but imagery is desperately needed on the lower slopes, where the terrain has allowed the flood waters to spread more widely.

Much of the area in Timure that was destroyed was 35- 50m above the river and was still swept away by the torrent of water and mud. Absolutely apocalyptic. A lot of Gosaikunda is 25-35m above the river. Above Resuo, the torrent appears to have breached well over 100m.

Very back-of-the-envelope quick maths, but given a sun elevation of 61 degrees, casting a shadow of 70-90m (along the azimuth) on a 20% downwards slope, that would suggest the crag cliff-face left after this collapse is 110m-150m tall!

A quick correction, looking at imagery from last year, the avalanche that I thought was separate from the main rockfall is actually just where the rock sticks out of the retreating glacier normally. Here's an image from Sept 2025.

Additional imagery from today shows that a barrier lake is already forming in the debris scar on Langtang Larung mountain.

@nrg8000.bsky.socialAug 27, 2026, 12:56 PM

Based on AI-building footprints, around 1,200 structures have been impacted in this area (All of this should be subject to higher-resolution satellite analysis; it is hard to reconcile 30m imagery with precise structures).

Here is the first helicopter shot, via Chinese media, of the rupture, absolutely massive. In the top just-right-of-centre of this photo.

@nrg8000.bsky.socialAug 27, 2026, 12:55 PM

Preliminary and incomplete (I will update based on new imagery) mapping shows that at least 21.9km2 has been inundated by the debris flow.

@nrg8000.bsky.socialAug 27, 2026, 12:54 PM

I'm not a geologist (if any read this, please share your thoughts!), but it looks as though, above the main rupture, there is an area where the ice has released off the intact rock surface, before the main rupture, where the bedrock itself failed, suggesting a compound failure.

@nrg8000.bsky.socialAug 27, 2026, 12:54 PM

The glacier detachment and rupture is over 1.6km across. This is likely in the hundreds of millions of cubic metres of debris, in just the initial rupture off the mountain.
