I highly recommend you give @doctorow.pluralistic.net a follow. Always good writing and always interesting (at times infuriating) topics.
He's a big part of it. Cordell mixed him quite low on the first two records, but Iovine recognized how much texture he brought to the band. I'd highly recommend listening to Mojo if you want to hear him really come to the fore (though Mojo is Mike's record sonically - particularly his /59 Les Paul)
We chatted about Paul's musical background, his recent original song collaborations, his Queen podcast, and then we dug into the eight tracks that I sent him to listen to, none of which he'd ever heard before!
This week is the first Petty 8ight installment for a couple of years! It was worth the wait though as my guest this week is the wonderful @journopaulb.bsky.social of Radio Pod Pod - A Queen Podcast, Real Human Beings, and American English.
Track Two from Mojo is the first cowrite with Mike Campbell and features some stunning dual guitars from him and Scott Thurston.
That album came out of nowhere. Absolutely stunning, and Not Dark Yet is the crowning jewel of the whole piece.
I couldn't agree more. I can only imagine where this guy is gonna be in ten years in terms of his writing and performing. He's a such a student of the craft that it will take really bad luck for him not to explode at some point.
Thanks for the tag but I'm an indie podcaster breaking down Tom's catalogue rather than an official band account!
You can find my episode on Runnin' Down a Dream here though 😊

We go track by track through the new record and get into some seriously nerdy territory!
Enjoy!
Friend of the podcast Jake Thistle is back to talk all about his new record, A Stranger by Design, but first we caught up on what he's been up to since we last saw each other in Gainesville!
“Yeah and I still get nervous every time that bugle blows”
This week’s episode covers the lead track from 2010’s Mojo!
Thanks so much for the invite Nick. It was a lot of fun chatting! 😊
Morning all! Nick Bambach from the excellent @rockinretropod.bsky.social podcast had me on his show a few weeks back to talk about Heartbreakers Beach Party! Give it a listen 😊 and follow the pod!
Not how I imagined spending my weekend, but there's a guy coming over wednesday to install the new one. He's My Hero. See you next week peeps!
I got another confession to make... my garage door is Foo... (bar) Due to a combination of trying to diagnosis a dead garage door opener, then driving 5 hours to pick up a new one THEN a road trip with my girls to see Dave and the boys live tomorrow, I haven't had time to record this week!
Our final playlists will be available later today but for now - have a listen and tell us what we're missing and what you were surprised to hear us pick!
Episode 300 is now up and ready for your ear holes folks!
My pal JP is back and we're drafting our top fifteen deep cuts from this immense catalogue!
Happy birthday to the king of the keys. The best damn rock n roll keyboard player of his generation, Mr. Benmont Tench. Thank you for decades of excellence sir!
Those years since the release of The Last DJ seemed to be pushing Tom inexorably toward this record.
Season Fifteen kicks off today!
On April 28th, 2009, Tom got the band back together. Obviously that’s a little overly dramatic. But the fact is that Mojo, eventually released on June 15, 2010, was the first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album in eight years.
