There it is - I wondered when your underlying racism would come out. Appropriation happens when a dominant culture takes something from a minority culture, not the other way around. Al Jolson in blackface, the Atlanta Braves tomahawk chop, Awkwafina affecting a blaccent, etc.

He hasn’t blocked me, but I don’t care. He just doesn’t understand that appropriating black music is different than honoring it. I also disagree that Elvis was king - if Buddy Holly hadn’t died, he’d be the king of rock and roll.

Elvis might have absorbed the music and culture, but then he took what wasn’t his and became famous instead of them. The difference is cultural appropriation vs. cultural appreciation. I grew up with lots of Latinx friends. Does it mean I can become the king of mariachi? No, because I’m white.

Copying the style of group you aren’t part of IS appropriation. Yes he had talent, but the equally (or more) talented musicians whose music he appropriated faded from history. Elvis invented nothing except a white face for black music. He was not the king - more of a 50s version of Vanilla Ice.
