2027 AAG Annual Meeting
FEBRUARY 8, 2027, 8:30AM EASTERN TIME (US AND CANADA) – FEBRUARY 12, 2027, 5:30PM EASTERN TIME (US AND CANADA)

Session Title: Geographies of Abortion Care: Embodied Resistance, Spatialities, and Solidarities

Organizers: Dr. Mantha Katsikana (Faculty of Health, York University) & Dr. Amanda De Lisio (Faculty of Health, York University)

Abortion has become a central focus of public and academic debate, particularly amid the global rise of far-right popularism and conservative politics that seek to undermine the reproductive agency of birthing people through legislative reforms and criminalization. These attacks on reproductive freedom are intensified by neoliberal austerity and the withdrawal of social protections (Di Chiro, 2008), along with the growing financialization of everyday life (Strauss, 2024). Together, these dynamics deepen existing crises of care (Fraser, 2016) and disproportionately harm birthing people; especially those who do not conform to white, cisheteropatriarchal norms of motherhood (Beutin, 2023; Harper-Shipman, 2026; Ross & Solinger, 2017).
Although abortion rights have long dominated liberal feminists’ agendas, the interventions of Black feminists through the Reproductive Justice movement and framework (Bond-Theriault, 2024; Ross & Solinger, 2017; Ross, 2016) have illuminated the intersectional dimensions of reproductive life, from contraception and healthcare access to birth and parenting. The Reproductive Justice framework has since been widely adapted and expanded through grassroots movements and research that demonstrates the realities of obstetric violence, medical racism, and colonialism on birthing people’s encounters with healthcare (Van Der Waal et al., 2025; Assis et al., 2022; Fletcher, 2016). [truncated by character limit]organizing enacted not only by abortion seekers but also by their communities and transnational solidarities, along with the synergies that emerge across different but overlapping justice movements such harm reduction, sex worker, migrant, refugee and disability justice, which collectively produce spatialities of reproductive resistance against far-right sensibilities and attendant governmentalities.
Taken together, papers may engage with, but are not limited to, the following themes:
• Lived experiences of abortion and care through place-based approaches
• Geographies and mobilities of abortion beyond urban/rural divides
• Urban justice and the city as a site of abortion access
• Digital geographies of abortion care and (counter-)surveillance
• Geographies of Indigenous Reproductive Justice
• Intersectional barriers to reproductive healthcare
• Incarceration, abolition, and reproductive justice
• Community-based responses to inaccessibility and care provision
• Place-making and knowledge production through reproductive justice work and organizing
• Spatialities of organizing, collective care, and reproductive labour
• Emotional, affective, and embodied geographies of abortion
• Cross-border networks, coalition building, and transnational solidarity
• Qualitative, participatory, creative, and autoethnographic methods
• Geohumanities approaches to abortion and reproductive care
Reproductive resilience/health in military occupation

If you are interested in submitting an abstract (250 words), please email Dr. Mantha Katsikana
(Faculty of Health, York University) at manthk@yorku.ca by October 10th, 2025.
AAG abstract submission deadline: October 15, 2026
AAG session organizing deadline: November 5, 2026
Emerging as broader patterns on an international context, the geographical analyses of abortion care tend to conceptualize the spatial dimension of abortion in terms of site-specific barriers across scales—particularly around domestic and cross border mobility and travel to clinics, healthcare spaces and the home; the urban vs. rural disparities in the provision of services; as well as the development of transnational activist networks that transgress border and geographies of the nation-state. Building on these gaps and critiques, Schurr et al. (2025) propose an agenda for “reproductive justice geographies” that not only applies the Reproductive Justice framework more critically, but also foregrounds spatial, environmental, and abolitionist justice, along with intersectional feminist political struggles (ibid). At the same time, non-geographical scholarship has documented the persistent impacts of colonial medical and obstetric violence (Shaheen-Hussain et al., 2023; Odhiambo et al., 2022; Nwoke & Leung, 2021; Palomo et al., 2021; Bi & Clusty, 2015), which disproportionately and intergenerationally affect Indigenous and racialized birthing people (McKenzie et al., 2022; Stote, 2022; Carranza Ko, 2018) across the world. Additionally, non-geographical scholarship has been addressing and documenting the transformative practices and impact of organizing in Latin American countries and the Caribbean (Alvarez and Veldhuis, 2026; Vacarezza & Burton, 2023; Assis & Larrea, 2022) as well as Ireland and Poland (Cullen & Korolczuk, 2019; Fischer, 2019; Calkin 2018; ), particularly in the context of abortion related legislation reforms during the last 20 years, along with translational organizing and the dissemination of knowledge particularly around self managed abortion (Braine, 2023).
