Charles's books 1491 and 1493, about the Americas before Columbus and the whole world after, are two of my favorite books of all time, so his POV on this matter is particularly worth your time!

It's a decoration for Halloween, a holiday rooted in warding off evil spirits. Am I supposed to assume this is simply a ghoulish looking female rabbi that they decided to decorate their lawn with to mark the High Holidays that ended weeks ago?

And at no point did the homeowner from Brooklyn notice something off about the decoration they carefully erected and decorated at the frontmost part of their yard?

Puerto Rico hasn't had reliable power in a decade. The grid sends occasional surges through the wires that fry appliances. Electricity rates are among the highest in the entire U.S. Heat waves are getting intense in the summer, and outages mean A/C is no guarantee for an aging population.

Trump's attempt to force through deep-sea mining by threatening to go it alone, Iraq War-style, on licensing appears to be backfiring. When countries gathered for a global summit last month, everyone ganged up on the U.S. and started publicly siding with China.

The Polish foreign minister, a writer and journalist who covered the Soviet war in Afghanistan in the 1980s, clearly knows a thing or two about a patiently-timed response.

This comes right after the world hit 1.5 degrees Celsius. In the United States, the country most responsible for the cumulative carbon in the atmosphere, we are at the dawn of a massive upswing in electricity demand from data centers, air conditioning and electrification.
