🌍 We’ve entered a new era of food crises. Our food systems aren't built to withstand them.

Decades of deep dependence on volatile global markets and fragile supply chains have made our food system vulnerable to shocks.

We need new economics of #resilience

2/ Low pay. Wage theft. Dangerous work. Forced labour. Discrimination. Insecure jobs. This isn’t accidental. Today’s food systems are built around keeping labour cheap and workers disempowered.

Exploitation is rife across the entire food chain - fishing, farmworkers, meat processing workers, school meals, food service workers, delivery drivers

1/ Who are the workers behind the food on our plates? What is that work really like?

1.4 billion people work across food systems – the world’s largest workforce. Yet food systems exploit more workers than any other sector. #FoodWork

4/4 But exploitation is not inevitable.

When food workers organize, they win better pay, safer workplaces & stronger rights.

Good food should never depend on poverty wages, unsafe work or invisible labour.

3/ And pressures are intensifying: 🌡️ Climate change is making work more dangerous 📱 AI & surveillance are creating new forms of control 🏢 Corporate concentration is weakening worker power

Six forces worsening food worker exploitation. Gender, class and race-based discrimination; restrictive migration policies; consolidated corporate power; digital technologies; climate breakdown; weakened public oversight.

1.4 billion people work in food systems – yet no other sector exploits more workers.

Our new #FoodWork report exposes why: exploitation is built into the system.

Food systems are "the largest employer and the most abusive sector on the planet." Gross exploitation of hundreds of millions of people for the sake of cheap food and private profits, made worse by concentrated corporate control of supply chains.

But changing the crops without changing the system is not enough.
