Don't worry. We found the abyss.
Such a great story! And a good reminder that our sister magazine @astral-af.bsky.social is coming back with a new issue this spring 🎉 (and submissions opening Nov 1st 🌟)
Sad. Reading to my daughter is perhaps my favorite part of parenting... there is quite/calm, closeness, wonder. Great things. The post makes me think of (and continue to wonder, WHY?!):
Very excited to announce the judges who will be joining us this year for our annual awards, The Foofs! Nominations open Nov 15th through Jan 15th so get your stories ready! @slashnburnett.bsky.social @erincairns.bsky.social @inkfoundry.bsky.social @hearthstories.bsky.social @ratbaglit.bsky.social
Any #girls5eva viewers/fans out there? Once you have heard it, does "BPE" ever stop looping in your head? Soooo catchy...
@foofarawpress.bsky.social 's Emporium now carries our issues (still for no charge) as well as those of our sibliing magazine @astral-af.bsky.social , @radonjournal.bsky.social , and their own publications. Might be your nice one stop shop for getting great fiction!
Our sibling magazine @astral-af.bsky.social is there too if anyone wants a good alien read!
Man, all those Urza artifacts really felt like it build up this whole world of buried treasures of another age. They did a good job (though I have not played much since ~1998 at the latest).
I thought I might nominate there as well, but it seems they require a google account 😒 Don't have, won't have. Maybe I'll shoot them an e-mail about it. If you know of other good award opportunities arund this time: post 'em! I'm on the lookout as well.
I appreciate the commitement to reading hard copy.
I definitely appreciated seeing your perspective in the convo (I agree with you) and sad to see it go. It helped give me the courage to dive in a bit in the same thread. That said, I completely understand... people are very heated (and it is very misplaced).
I'd neverheard of #LitMagWeek but I guess it is this week? I don't have anything to put on sale... but our epubs, azw3s, and pdfs are always freely available:
Help yourself any time :-D
All to say: Pangram is the least of the problems short fiction faces. The fight isn't with small magazines over Pangram. It is with gen AI on the whole and the trillions of dollars invested in it. There is not an easy solution and I understand the anger and reactionism, but it makes me sad.
All of the major generative LLM companies operate web scrapers. Magazines with publicly posted stories are likely being scraped and fed into getAI. Should we not put stories online at all? Oh, wait: they are buying print copies too... At some point this is a witch hunt with no purpose.
Should there be a filter/tag for that? I, for one, block all google IPs at the network level and do not interact directly with the company at all. I guess my point is that people have a lot of unease with various companies... where do their preferences become a line in the sand? Where do mine?
I'd bring up google docs. I'm sure many magazines use it is as way to store, sort, or distribute to slush readers. It is not a detector, nor an "AI" system in itself... but it is a known thing that google scans e-mail and documents stored on their servers.
Submissions are still open for two more days... If you write cozy, nature-oriented, family-oriented, or lightly romantic fantasy: we'd love to hear from you!

A few folks had done this and it seemed fun. They didn't have "Rock & Roll Racing" or "Angband", both favorites... so put those in the list and kick out the last two?
Just one more week to submit a story for our current submission call (submissions close at the end of the month). We'd love to hear from you if we haven't already 😀
standardebook uses it as a form of PD status proof. You look for books that came out pre-1932 that show fine art in them. Once you find a piece you like in the book page scans you find a nice high resolution version elsewhere. But it lets you rest easy with the PD status (is the idea).
