Shipping is the main source of underwater noise, and ship strikes threaten endangered whales. At an @emsa-eu.bsky.social workshop in Lisbon, OceanCare called for mandatory speed reduction: one simple measure that cuts noise, collisions and emissions.
The London Convention and London Protocol Meeting of the Parties has just ended with an important result: after more than a decade of work, States have agreed on three frameworks to assess #marinegeoengineering research proposals, grounded in a clear precautionary approach. Learn more. 📹👇

The moratorium on commercial whaling holds. 🐋 OceanCare's Managing Director @fabiennemcl.bsky.social on the outcome of the International Whaling Commission, #IWC70, in Hobart, in a new article by @mongabay.com:
Ship strikes are a major cause of whale mortality in the NW Med. Slowing down lowers the risk, yet voluntary compliance is low. This week, #ACCOBAMS held an event at the Genoa Boat Show, which highlighted the importance of the NW Med for whales & the growing threats by maritime traffic. Read more.👇
At #IWC70 in Hobart, OceanCare brought the welfare of whales to the INTERNATIONAL WHALING COMMISSION. We are deeply concerned about the methods used to kill whales. There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea. But whaling is not only a conservation matter. It is an animal welfare issue. ⚠️ 🐋
The 70th meeting of the International Whaling Commission, #IWC70, has just ended in Hobart, Tasmania, & the most important news first: the moratorium on commercial whaling was upheld. Learn more about the results in this video by OceanCare's Fabienne McLellan. 📹👇

Day 3 at International Whaling Commission, #IWC70, in Hobart: whale welfare deserves far more attention. Humane World for Animals, the @eia-news.bsky.social, OceanCare and 11 other organisations addressed the Commission on the wider welfare implications facing whales. 👇📹
To our regret, #Switzerland has today withdrawn its resolution on Small Cetacean Directed Takes Linked to Commercial Fisheries at #IWC70. In our view, the withdrawal came too early. We believe the resolution would have found broad support among other Member States. 1/2
🐋 The International Whaling Commission, #IWC70, has already started in Hobart. Today the in total 6 resolutions were presented, including the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary. But one proposal gives us particular cause for concern: the resolution tabled by Antigua and Barbuda. Learn more. 📹👇
2/2 Yet Antigua and Barbuda is pushing once again to overturn this vitally important conservation tool. Beyond whaling, whales, dolphins and porpoises face threats the moratorium was never designed to directly address. Read more about what is at stake at #IWC70: www.oceancare.org/en/stories_a...
On Monday, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) opens its 70th meeting in Hobart. This year marks two major anniversaries: the IWC was founded 80 years ago and 40 years ago the global ban on commercial whaling came into force, which saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of whales. 1/2
Germany, Papua New Guinea and Zimbabwe have become the latest nations to ratify the #HighSeasTreaty!
With the Treaty in force, every ratification brings us closer to universal ratification. Ratifying now guarantees these nations a seat at #BBNJCOP1.
11 local environmental groups and OceanCare are urging Antigua and Barbuda to withdraw its resolution to weaken the global moratorium on commercial whaling at IWC70. A recent poll shows most of its own citizens oppose commercial whaling.

3/3 OceanCare's Carlos Bravo Villa explains, that the shipping sector is unlikely to slow down without binding rules. The #IMO has signalled the scope to go further, with Member States able to propose additional measures where monitoring shows they are needed:

2/3 Scientific evidence shows that the risk of fatal collisions is very low, if vessel’s speed does not exceed 10 knots. In 2023, the NW #Mediterranean was designated by the IMO as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA), with recommended speeds of may 10-13 knots, but these remain voluntary.
